What books have you enjoyed reading to your 9 year old?

OK, I'm sure most MNetters 9 year olds are too advanced for a bedtime story and read Shakespeare to themselves each evening....but I'm still reading to 9yo DD, and am looking for our next chapter book.

We just finished Jacqueline Wilson's Opel Plumstead, although had to skip over a couple of inappropriate bits!

My 8 yo is currently reading Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence - like famous 5 but Roman. We read with him at night and he reads extra to himself. Really good stories and accurate info about the Romans.

You might want to skim ahead with the Roman mysteries books Sunny - they definitely start to contain more grown up themes as the stories go along !

I am reading "The Phoenix and the Carpet" with 9 year old DD. I'm enjoying rereading it plus can explain some of the historical references/setting that goes over her head!

I really enjoyed reading her The Railway Children although couldn't get through the last chapter without breaking down! Also Ballet Shoes.

I'm reading DD (8) and DS (5) Charlotte's Web at the moment and they are loving it. She's read it already but they are never to old to enjoy being read to.

Mutley77 · 21/04/2015 14:47

She is 10 but has been reading similar things since she was nine and loves anything by Jacqueline Wilson. I must say with 2 younger children I am generally minded to leave her to it but I am sure with my youngest I will read to her until she leaves home!!!!

Many that you have already been recommended but some others that i can't see here -

Percy Jackson - and there is another series after that
The Ingo series by Helen Dunmore
Adventure Island series by Helen Moss (my DD grew out of these before she'd really got into them but she grew up quite quickly at age 8/9 for various reasons - and I thought they were good, trying to get DS age 6 into them now).

PrettyPirate · 22/04/2015 13:40

My DH reads to DD(8) every night, latest favourites were Rooftoppers by K.Rundell and Nathalia Buttface and the Most Embarrassing Dad by N.Smith.

Yep, still reading to nearly 9yo DD here... Jacqueline Wilson Paws and Whiskers was a smash hit and often drew in DS 7 and DD2 4 too. It's extracts from lots of animal books so has led us onto 101 Dalmatians and a big list of others to try - Michael Morpurgo Best Friend, etc.

Sky Hawk and White Dolphin by Gill Lewis were both v popular too.

Thanks to others for suggestions - have a big library list now.
