for light reading, there's a series of simple books Daisy and the trouble with...

My dd is only 6 so this suggestion might be a little young for her, although they are beautifully written - the Violet Mackerel by Anna Branford.

Or The Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

HarrietSchulenberg · 09/04/2015 11:51

The How To Train Your Dragon books go down very well in this house. You are best off reading them in sequence, and the more recent books do get a bit scary unless you know the characters.

The Mr Gum books are also a big hit in this house too. With both adults and children.

bookwormbeagle · 09/04/2015 11:52

*series that should say!

Tftpoo · 09/04/2015 11:53

I help at Brownies (aged 7-10) and we have done book lover badge recently. The favourites seemed to be anything by David Walliams (Gangster Granny and Rat Burger are the two that stick in my mind), Michael Morpurgo, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Roald Dahl (Matilda, BFG, The Twits etc). Also Zthe Worst Witch series were popular.

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/04/2015 11:54

We have already done Roald Dahl and worst witch.

dragon books are definitely on the list now too though

Noel Streatfeild - Ballet Shoes, White Boots, Tennis Shoes etc

alexpolistigers · 09/04/2015 13:24

You might try the Lucy Evans books by Millie Slavidou. They are mostly ebooks, but this one is out in paperback so I suspect the others will be too at some point. It's about a girl heroine, not in the least princessy.

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/04/2015 14:58

I shall run all these past dd. just found 50 quids worth of vouchers from birthday and Xmas so should be fun looking Smile

Shrinking Violet books.

Fortunately The Milk, by Neil Gaimen.

Humphrey the Hamster series by Betty Birney.

Sophie and the Shadow Woods series by Linda Chapman.

hugoagogo · 09/04/2015 15:09

Don't forget to try the library, them if she doesn't like something you haven't wasted your vouchers.

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/04/2015 15:10

That's a good point x

She might like the Artemis Fowl books too - what with the modern take on fairies and mythology.

MrsCakesPrecognitionisSwitched · 09/04/2015 15:14

And DD loved the Sisters Grimm series sistersgrimm.com/books.html

BlueChampagne · 12/04/2015 22:59

Wings and Co Fairy Detective Agency
Ottoline
Goth Girl
101 Dalmatians
Charlotte's Web
Roman Mysteries
Swallows and Amazons?

BlueChampagne · 12/04/2015 23:00

How about Andrew Mathews and Tony Ross's Stories from Shakespeare?

Jux · 12/04/2015 23:53

Lady Grace? Historical series, featuring a young lady in waiting in Elizabeth's court who solves mysteries. DD enjoyed them at that age.

AtomicDog · 12/04/2015 23:58

Lemony Snicket?
Charlotte's Web
Railway Children
Indian in the Cupboard
Here Be Monsters
Terry Pratchett's Truckers, Diggers, Wings

sparkysparkysparky · 23/04/2015 10:25

I found Lady Grace a bit "heaving bosoms".
DD (8) enjoyed the Mariella Mystery series recently.
We've tried a few Jacqueline Wilson ones recently. Glubbslyme didnâ??t have too much "things that need long explaining conversations " in them.

Jux · 23/04/2015 11:14

Grin did you, sparky? i suppose there were some of the sillier Ladies in Waiting getting a bit hot under the collar about rich young gents!looking back, dd despised them (that's a bit strong a word though) and was definitely uninterested in emulating them. She hasn't changed in the intervening period either and still is far more interested in being herself, doesn't mind being a bit different.
