Not sure if this is the right place to ask. But my year 3 DS has been given Easter homework of learning and memorizing a poem. Has anyone got any recommendations?

TIA :)

How about Spike Milligan's Ning Nang Nong.

Thanks Quangle. It's an option, but i think all the Ning Nang Nong-ness is putting him off, and he's scared he'll get confused. But i think once he's got the hang of it he'll be fine.

DS learnt a Michael Rosen poem, but we can't remember which one (unhelpful). But he has written lots of short funny ones

This book is brilliant and packed full of great child-friendly poems. My DC of a similar age loved it.

I Like This Poem

But one poem my DD learnt off by heart from the book (not asked to, she just liked it) was the witches' 'Double, double, boil and bubble' from Macbeth.
Not strictly a poem, of course, but it would definitely pass.

I've had that book since 1979 Dory! Always loved it. DCs love this one from that book:

By far the naughtiest children I know
are Jasper Geranium James and Jo.

They live in a house on the Hill of Kidd,
and what in the world do you think they did?

They asked their uncles and aunts to tea,
and shouted in loud rude voices 'We

are tired of scoldings and sendings to bed:
now the grown-ups shall be punished instead.'

They said 'Auntie Em, you didn't say thank you!'
They said 'Uncle Robert, we're going to spank you!'

They pulled the beard of Sir Henry Dorner
and put him to stand in disgrace in the corner.

They scolded Aunt B, they punished Aunt Jane;
they slapped Aunt Louisa again and again.

They said 'Naughty boy!' to their Uncle Fred,
and boxed his ears and sent him to bed.

Do you think Aunts Em and Loo and B
and Sir Henry Dorner (K.C.B.)

and the elderly uncles and kind Aunt Jane
will go to tea with the children again?

Elizabeth Godley, from Green Outside 1932.

Thanks Everyone!

We actually tweeted Michael Rosen asking about his favourite poem, and he responded within 5 minutes. Ds was incredibly pleased with that!

That's fantastic OP. What was his favourite poem?

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 07/04/2015 20:01

Dd just learned The Owl and the Pussycat and really likes it.

Opipjo · 09/04/2015 14:43

It was the 'Boogy Woogy Buggy'. We watched the clip of him performing it, DS loved it, but it needs quite a lot of expression added to make it sound awesome.
Ds has ASD and finds performance/expression quite hard.

But he's now mastered the first 3 verses of 'Ning Nang Nong' , with actions added to help him :)

How about Bananas in my Ears from the legend himself?!

Plus Old Possums Book of Practical Cats is just lovely!
