If I won't let DS1 read the hunger games trilogy would I let him read the maze runner books?

Its his birthday next week and so I don't have time to read them all first to check them. I've read (and enjoyed) the hunger games trilogy but feel the content is too old for DS1 who will be 10. I wouldn't let him read the Gone series either. He is a good reader, currently loves the mortal engines (predator cities) series, adored City of Ember. Are the maze runner books ok or too old (given my strictness Grin)?

Not if you wouldn't let him read The Hunger Games (according to DS 14)

Maybe try The Henderson Boys series by Robert Muchamore

How about the Tunnels series - there is also a movie planned so he can be ahead of the curve :)

I presume he has already read Skulduggery Pleasant? If not then I'd recommend those too.

Gone is the worst out of the three by far. I'm currently on book 2 of Maze Runner and it's pretty similar to HG to be honest.

Divergent series maybe?

That's really helpful everyone, thank you. I might buy the set (v cheap) and put it away for a year or so then.

Yes - Maze Runner similar to Hunger Games as pp have said.

What about the Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz? The first one is called Raven's Gate.

littlesupersparks · 31/03/2015 19:29

Power of 5 series is AMAZING!

I haven't read it myself, so you might want to check it out, but I remember dd saying that she thought After Tomorrow by Gillian Cross (dystopian future again) was good but aimed at younger readers than HG / Divergent etc.

I'd say Divergent just as bad as HG esp because of the ending to the trilogy.

Takver · 01/04/2015 17:52

And yes, I'd agree HG a bit much for a just 10 year old!

May I suggest Artemis Fowl, Sam Hudson, Connor Clover, Junior James Bond or Sherlock books. Plenty of adventure but more suitable. Maybe Alex Rider books, too. Percy Jackson.

trinity0097 · 09/04/2015 20:34

Young Sherlock series? You can get them cheap on bookpeople

OMGmetoo · 09/04/2015 20:50

I read Ender's Game at that age, bloody brilliant and while it has violence it is far less senseless than in HG. There is a small bit of weird (non-sex) brother-sister incest though, which totally flew over my head at the time...

jelliebelly · 09/04/2015 20:52

Alex rider series by Antony Horowitz or Percy Jackson series.

jelliebelly · 09/04/2015 20:53

Ds also really enjoying Itch by Simon Mayo

cariadlet · 18/04/2015 23:45

I love the Power of 5, but wouldn't recommend them for a 10 year old. I think some of the themes are too grown up, and they're quite scary.

If he enjoys mortal engines, I'd recommend Artemis Fowl (or some of Eoin Colfer's other books), Philip Pullman, Dianne Wynn Jones and Terry Pratchett.

ladydepp · 19/04/2015 21:56

I let my ds read HG at 11, he is 12 now and reading Maze Runner.

ladydepp · 19/04/2015 21:57

Sorry, posted too soon!

I would hold off on Maze Runner until he's a bit older.

In addition to what others have said how about the Jimmy Coates books?
