Similar to How To Train Your Dragon series?

DS1(8) has just swallowed the whole How To Train Your Dragon series in about a fortnigh, having previously only really read non-fiction. He says he's now re-reading them until the next one in the series comes out but I'd like to have some suggestions for other fiction he might like.

I think what he likes about HTTYD is 1) the taxonomising and natural history element of the dragons - he's always liked this kind of thing and is keen on wildlife etc. 2) Toothless's cute naughtiness 3) the geeky hero (he's definitely a geek himself!) and 4) the historical and geographical setting (his main non-fiction reading is Horrible Histories/Geographies). So books that combined a couple of these might be promising.

I think he'd really like Harry Potter, but he's taken against them, for some reason (without ever having read any). I got 'Eragon' from the library on the grounds that it was also about dragons but I think it might be a bit old for him and he's not touched it yet.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

The one book that springs to mind is the Temeraire series. It's set in the Napoleonic wars, with the (totally naturalistically portrayed) addition of dragons and a dragon based 'air force'. There's loads of 'natural history' about the different types of dragons, as well as lots of sailing stuff.

But - they are written for adults. DD read them when she was in primary, and I thought they were fine, but you might want to read yourself first. IIRC (it's a while ago) the first one has a fairly minimal sex scene that I think an 8 y/o wouldn't even really spot, but some of the later ones might be less suitable. (The first one is way the best anyway!)

Ooh, thank you. I don't know those and will try the first one - sounds good for me too!

I think the Dragons of Wayward Crescent series is well written, but he may find it a little young.

This series en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Awfully_Beastly_Business might be worth a go.
