Harry Potter withdrawal symptoms

Hi there,
I read with interest your discussion topic on other book suggestions for HP "addict". My 9 year old daughter has finished the Harry Potter series and is now in search of something good to read. We tried Phillip Pullman and Terry Pratchett but to no avail. Any recommendations? She is not so interested in the animal themed books - prefers something magical but not too science-fictiony....

I haven't read the other thread but I adored Dianne Wynne Jones when I was about your daughters age. The Chrestomanci series is great (Witch Week was my favourite - Harry Potter totally reminded me of that book) and I still vividly remember the Ogre Downstairs (or something) about children living with a new step-dad.

Nina Bawden also did some great children's stories - in particular Carrie's War (made me weep)

Other than that has she read Roald Dahl (v obvious - I'm sure she has)

"The Dark is Rising" and "A Wizard of Earthsea" might float her boat.

Jenny Nimmo's Charlie Bone series is very like the early HPs in tone (much less dark than the later books)
Definitely yes to the Chrestomanci books - she might also really like The Ogre Downstairs by DWJ, very funny + magic
My HP mad dd loves Percy Jackson and the various other Rick Riordan series - I think they'd be ok for a 9 year old.
Maybe The Dark is Rising, but Wizard of Earthsea perhaps a little old?

A little different, in that they're more 'real world' set, and more funny than adventure - Edward Eager's books (Half Magic, the Time Garden, can't remember the others but there's a few).

Maybe something she's read already, but the Narnia series?

Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.

Also the Djinn series (Fire Djinn, Sea Djinn etc) by Linda Davies.

was just about to say percy jackson.. they are where we went after Harry Potter and both boys love the combination of young children mystery and adventures.

I know it's pretty light hearted stuff but I still like it ; The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. It has the same magic school feel, it being set in a Witch Academy.

The Steps Up The Chimney series is a brilliant fantasy and it was adapted in to a really good BBC drama about 15 years ago. It's very similar to Narnia, and the children can turn in to animals. Can't recommend it enough.

There's an amazing book which has loads of behind the scenes stuff from the films in it which I want.

Seconding the recommendation for "The Steps Up the Chimney"... think that is one of the books and the whole series is "The Magician's House"? They're by William Corlett
