As kids spend more and more time glued to a screen, they’re experiencing less and less of nature and the great outdoors. To help you enjoy the first whiffs of spring, we’re working with publishers Frances Lincoln to give away one £100 North Face e-giftcard, as well as 5 copies of their new book 100 Family Adventures.

100 Family Adventures is a brilliant resource book packed full of fun ideas for outdoor activities the whole family can enjoy. There’s tips and tricks for budding explorers, sailors and mountaineers, as well as games and adventures more suited to your local area.

To enter our competition, post your top tips for getting your kids up and out into the fresh air on the thread below. The more inventive the better! Share your ideas on this thread before 10am on 6th April 2015. 100 Family Adventures is published on 5th March 2015

We play alot of timing games which makes the children want to do stuff and beat their own time like finding objects x

shona40 · 05/04/2015 17:04

as we stay on a farm the kids love the country as all around us they help feed the animals and in winter bed them but so much wildlife in the country to see as all there pals from school are often out o go walking in woods beside us or just to see nature

ddpunk182 · 05/04/2015 17:46

We love walking together, but we live near beautiful canals so it makes it easy when you have pretty things to look at!

janemphoto · 05/04/2015 19:48

Just going to the park or up the hill, always give them some challenge to do, like run that far or jump over something so it's more fun

jrobbs · 05/04/2015 20:23

When my children were younger we would enact the Bear Hunt. This not only took place in woods and forests, but we also once recited 'we're going on a bear hunt' whilst on a beach in Canada . . with all the sound effects and a little deviation from the original text, but hey, the adaptations all added to the adventure

Managed to get my teen and tween out today for a lovely long walk. Just put a couple of Creme Eggs in our pockets and we went for hours.

Kangakate · 05/04/2015 20:46

Goe-caching and dog walking, the kids love it and the dog gets exercised

smit23 · 05/04/2015 20:58

I bribe them with a picnic....... Blush

WaxyBean · 05/04/2015 21:04

Top tip: get or borrow a dog. My boys will walk with a dog for miles, throw balls for hours and run and play with a dog forever. We don't have a dog but regularly borrow one for days outside. Mutually beneficial for the dog owner too who gets a day off and a knackered dog back at the end of it.

katieskatie82 · 05/04/2015 21:30

my son loves going to the beach! I always make the places we go into an adventure by saying we can look for things eg, shells and stones at the beach! We then go home and paint pictures on the stones! x

hanliying · 05/04/2015 22:38

Have them carry a small basket and bring 10 different shapes of leaves and make a pic

monty79 · 06/04/2015 00:27

We make a nice picnic and go to the park. Letting the children get involved & helping with preparations can make them very enthusiastic about the day out.

kaytee75 · 06/04/2015 00:31

I like to take them to the local country park to feed the ducks and swans. Animals always get kids interested and they can have a nice long walk around, where you can point out the insects, plants etc

sleeponeday · 06/04/2015 00:35

Scavenger hunts; a picnic; a dog walk (so they feel morally obliged to ensure the hound gets the exercise); a camera and a suggestion that they record their walk and all they see on it; talking about the place we're going well in advance so the desire to go has been well stoked! And if all else fails, we walk through a large park to the ice cream parlour at the other side, via insatiably hungry ducks that DS is delightedly certain recognise him. He's too busy getting to both places to notice he's using his little legs, and when it's home time, it's the only option!

srobbo71 · 06/04/2015 02:11

I leave the doors open so that fresh air whafts through the house, before long the kids can't resist going out to enjoy the outdoors

Ryancrawshaw · 06/04/2015 07:01

A trip to the seaside, whatever the weather it is a great day out, sandcastle making, running round no worries of cars, chasing the waves, rock pooling and much much more

lilmiztam22 · 06/04/2015 10:41

Playing pirates exploring and maybe even making a map, spotting different things with x marks the spot being the park!

cheryl100 · 06/04/2015 11:30

My son has recently become involved in fishing with his Dad - it means quality time for them and teaches him patience :)

Nuttynelnew · 06/04/2015 16:25

During the holidays you will find in your local paper that often coucils hold bike rides, nature walk days , last year my kids went on a bear hunt they really enjoyed it . I have a bird book and we will sit on an evening and the love guessing the birds then when its a nice day we will go out and they have their own set of binoculars and look for the birds. Another dry day activity they enjoy doing is collecting leaves - we go to the local park or lake collect all the leave and then make pictures with them when they get home they love that

piggypoo · 06/04/2015 17:25

We go on nature trails and encourage them to help plan the garden, with a say on what veggies to plant and fruits to grow! They can't wait to get out there!

HopecoveGirl · 06/04/2015 17:39

I find a Treasure Hunt is always a way to get my children interested in going outside. They wake up excited, ready for an unknown adventure. It doesn't have to cost anything financially, just a bit of pre-planning before.

As a bonus, they learning about nature and the environment around them, whilst having fun!

TiggersAngel7774 · 06/04/2015 20:44

We always got bribed if we made most of the day and didnt moan and whine we could have a "Joe's " ice cream. Joe's a local ice cream company in Swansea and best ice cream ever so this would always work as was a treat to go and get one

twentyten · 06/04/2015 20:54

My dd had a metal detector which she took for walks.....we scattered a few coins when she was beginning to flag......look over here!!! Worked for years!!!!SmileSmile

chunkychocky · 06/04/2015 21:04

We did the Gromit trail in Bristol a couple of years ago, and visited parts of the city that we would never have seen otherwise. The kids loved it and we've been exploring other parts of our city since then. This summer is the Shaun the Sheep trail and we are definitely going to complete this one too.

jacqroberts68 · 06/04/2015 21:13

I take the kids to lamb feeding, nature trails or organised walks, anything that keeps them focused. We have to keep it free so makes you use your imagination. They even fed some farm animals and the farm dogs for the owners.
