Books for a 10 year old boy who reads a LOT. I've run out of ideas and we have vouchers to spend!

We have £40 of book tokens and the plan for this afternoon (and a poorly boy who is stuck in bed) is to go online and spend them. I'm stuck for suggestions though. He reads a lot and we've done most of the popular series, Rick Riordan, HP, The secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel etc.

He loved the following:

the letter for the king
small change for stuart/big change for stuart
the invention of hugo cabret
wonder
Momo
The Never ending story
Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit
His Dark Materials

Trying to stay away from dystopia stuff e.g. Hunger games, divergence etc given his age. He has read the Predator Cities series though

Any suggestions for great books we might not have thought of? I was considering Holes.

Similarly if anyone has any suggestions for DS2 (8) who already has his brother's double stacked bookcases to choose from that would be great.

My avid reader recommends the Biggles books, James Bond, Redwall books, Percy Jackson

Leeds2 · 20/02/2015 15:17

Swallows & Amazons series

Garth Nix books called, I think, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 20/02/2015 15:22

Would he like Joe Craig? Charlie Higson?

cosmicglittergirl · 20/02/2015 15:26

Wolf Brother. Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. Six in total by Michelle Paver.

Professor Branestawm
Sherlock Holmes
Watership Down

KeyBored · 20/02/2015 15:29

The Last Dragon chronicles

Treasure Island
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Railway Children
Animal Farm
Swallows and Amazons
Just William
The Famous Five
Tom's Midnight Garden
Any Michael Morpugo stories
George's Secret Key to The Universe (& 3 more books in series) Lucy Hawking

noblegiraffe · 20/02/2015 15:37

A Wrinkle in Time (L'Engle)
Holes (Sachar)

SisterMoonshine · 20/02/2015 15:46

The Wolf Brother series

Takver · 20/02/2015 16:43

Second vote for Diana Wynne Jones - Chrestomanci series plus others.

MaCosta · 20/02/2015 17:17

Great suggestions here thank you.

We've done some of them, chronicles of ancient darkness, chrestomanci, Tom's Midnight garden, lots of Michael Morpurgo, Georges Secret Key and Percy Jackson but lots of new ones for us to look at!

All David Walliams books.

wearymum200 · 20/02/2015 17:22

Biggles, Edge Chronicles, Stoneheart series, Brotherband, operation red Jericho, adventure island, hero on a bicycle, tales from Schwartzgarten, goth girl, five children and it on the western front all popular with Ds1.

cosmicglittergirl · 20/02/2015 18:26

Berlie Doherty has written some good books too.

theconstantvacuumer · 20/02/2015 18:28

The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper.

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin.

MaCosta · 20/02/2015 18:36

Right this is what they chose (with a bit of nudging from me)

City of Ember
Skellig
The Boy who swam with piranhas
Boy in the tower
George and the big bang
The Silver Sword
Holes
When Hitler Stole pink rabbit

That should keep them busy for a while and now they have plenty more from your suggestions for when they get more tokens (school give them out if they read 10 books each term).

Mysterious benedict society

ragged · 17/03/2015 21:25

Hardy boys, Diana Wynne Jones, Sam Hudson, Connor Clover I think it's called. I read a lot of Agatha Christie & Dick Francis at that age.

Sherlock as a kid books.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 17/03/2015 21:27

My DS is devouring the Lemony Snicket books at the moment.

I'll be suggesting the Artemis Fowl series to him once he has finished with LS.

Fishandjam · 17/03/2015 21:28

Might be a bit dated now, but what about the Willard Price adventure series? I adored them when I was 10 (and felt very righteous to be a girl reading them too, as they were aimed squarely at boys back in the 1980s!) Will linky in a mo.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 17/03/2015 21:31

Am I the first to say Terry Pratchett? Grin Maurice And His Amazing Educatd Rodents, the Johnny/Only You Can Save Mankind series and, of course, the Discword books.

Neil Giman's Coraline, Fortunately The Milk, Odd And The Frost Giants and The Graveyard Book are worth considering too.

Fishandjam · 17/03/2015 21:34

Not sure about all the Discworld books, seahorses - unless you're ok with explaining stuff like the Guild Of Seamstresses to a 10 year old! Grin
