books that are emotionally challenging

That's the instructions from school But no recommendations which was helpful!

I'm after books for a bright y5 girl with a reading and comprehension age of 13+ that will challenge and engage her emotionally (and wean her off harry potter!) I'm coming up against a brick wall because they're either suitable content wise for her age or they're suitable ability wise but there doesn't seem to be a happy medium of books that do both

Thanks in advance!

How about " I am David ". We read this last year of primary school (in the 70sBlush ) and I still remember how it moved me.

I agree with Feel like scrooge - some of the suggestions here are too mature in content for a Year 5 child.

I would recommend

Rooftoppers

Secret Hen House Theatre

Illustrated Mum

Journey to the River Sea

Not Bad for a Bad Lad

Wonder

Boy in the Girls Bathroom

Cowgirl

Boy in the Tower

Eleventh Orphan

I also agree with Feellikescrooge.

I remember reading a book I couldn't understand, when I was 6 I think. It was a Miss Bianca book. I could read the words and make sentences out of them but nothing formed in my head as a result. A very odd feeling. I think it was a brush with hyperlexia.

Talking of which, books like Miss Bianca In the Salt Mines, The Secret Garden and A Little Princess may be thoroughly dated in their emotions and politics but they are emotional wringers all right.

Does it have to be fiction?

As a kid with an advanced reading age, when I got to this point, my mum gave me biographies, poetry and plays to read.
