Shirley Hughes' Alfie books have been entertaining pre-school readers for over 30 years and when Alfie's Christmas was published last year our giveaway was met with glowing reviews from Mumsnetters. One reader remarked 'I think reading it will become a Christmas tradition in our house!'

To celebrate Alfie's Christmas this year Random House Children's books are running a competition to find the best home-made Christmas decorations. We want you to take a pic of your creations (or those made by your dcs) and upload it to this thread. The winner will receive an award winning red Mini Micro Scooter just like Alfie's and two runners up will each receive a copy of Alfie's Christmas book.

Post up your pictures of your creations before Sunday 14th December and the winner will be announced on Monday 15th.

Shirley Hughes' latest book A Year of Stories is a beautiful treasury filled with tales and poems for every month of the year and includes some of the Alfie Stories. Find out more about the book and download the Alfie activity sheets.

This competition is sponsored by Random House Children's books.

After 6 very sensible years I had a biref lapse in concentration and bought my 3 children glitter to make some decorations. They have had a wonderful time, and these stars do look lovely, but at 6, 3 and 1, they have managed to spread the glitter liberally around the whole kitchen, and the floor now has a distinct sparkle effect - very christmassy!

My mum had all her precious sentimental christmas decorations stolen in a burglary (I know - who on earth steals xmas decorations?) and I spent hours making her new baubles. I had a few bits left over so we made some for our tree too. The kids made helpful suggestions, but as it involved pins, there wasn't a chance for them to complete one by themselves. We now have a few new baubles and a gang of snowmen with button hats gracing our tree! It's really addictive!

I made this while doodling in work and DS (3) insisted we put them on the tree.

I made the wreath with holly and lots of decorative extras to make it really Christmassy I'm going to hang it on the door in the living room.
Our tree is decorated with salt dough decorations made by DS age 2 he decorated them with paint glitter stickers and fake snow. The angel is also homemade from a craft kit by DS DP and me.
The last picture is our work in progress - DP is using cardboard boxes to make a fireplace for santa it will be papier machie'd and he assures me it will have a brick effect in time for Christmas Eve Xmas Grin

A fabulous alternative to Salt dough is this easy peasy 'no baking required' white dough made with bicarb, cornflour and warm water. Just a quick stir on the hob and then make into decorations and leave to dry.

My little girl loved making these.

Here are the rest of the pics of her making the special white dough - it really is more fun to make and easier than regular salt dough. Then just glue on glitter and beads to decorate. If you add some glitter and sequins before the dough dries, then they should stick on there without glue.

Probably too late but wanted to share in any case Smile

Cat food box, paint, glue and an inordinate amount of cotton wool balls. Doable from whatever age you can stand the mess from really! Grin
