Looking for suggestions for Christmas/ birthday lists for dd2 who is now munching books at an alarming rate. Having a ds1 who was all about action stories, I need alternatives (we are still Rainbow fairy-free, hurrah)
This week she has read and enjoyed Barney the boat dog, George's Marvellous medicine, some Holly Webb, some of the magic kitten/ bunny etc stories, Lotta. She's currently reading The Starlight Barking, which is prob on the edge of her ability, but she loves it. Other faves include the Clementine Rose books, but she is not keen on any Blyton we've so far rolled out (Wishing chair, Amelia Jane, Secret 7, Naughtiest Girl).
Please kind mumsnetters, tell me some more books!

What about the Paddington stories?

Michael Morpurgo, they are all for different ages, so check which ones are right for her.

Dick King-Smith

Older authors like Joan Aiken and Helen Cresswell

Oh you must try the Violet Mackerel books. They are beautiful, and wonderfully written. There's a whole series of them, so they will keep her entertained for quite some time.

I'd also second the suggestion for Oliver and the Seawigs, the duo who created it have just released a second chapter book - Cakes in Space - which is also really very good.

Finally take a look at Philip Ardagh's Grunts series. Very entertaining, in a similar vein to Roald Dahl.

Have you got the Nelly the Monster Sitter series by Kes Gray? DS1 loved them.

And I loved the My naughty little sister series. Also what about the Arabelle and Mortimer series?

annettec01 · 11/10/2014 19:42

What about David waliams books like gangsta granny and mr stink?

nonicknameseemsavailable · 11/10/2014 21:29

definitely The Worst Witch books - there are 7 now. I agree Olga Da Polga and other Dick King Smith, DD1 is currently enjoying the Maisie Hitchins books and has liked all Holly Webb books, Ramona? I keep meaning to get hold of them for DD1 but not done so yet. Carbonel? an old one but I remember enjoying it. yes to Gobbolino. Have you tried the Gwyneth Rees books? my super sister, the dress shop ones and I think there are others too. Iggy and Me? Zoe's Rescue Zoo went down well here too.

How old is she?
