To coincide with National Grandparents Day on Sunday 5 October we’re giving away ten sets of the treasured children’s bedtime story book, The Owl and the Pussy-cat as well as the follow-up title, The Further Adventures of the Owl and the Pussy-cat, which has a companion CD.

The new picture edition of Edward Lear’s classic poem features illustrations by Charlotte Voake while The Further Adventures of The Owl and the Pussy-cat creates a wonderful new story penned by The Gruffalo author, Julie Donaldson.

To enter our competition, we’d like to hear about the stories you read once upon a time with your grandparents. Whether old literary favourites or less well-known gems, we want to know the books that help generations of families unite. Share your stories on this thread before 10am Thursday 9 October. The publication of The Owl and the Pussy-cat and The Further Adventures of The Owl and the Pussy-cat is 2 October 2014.

This competition is sponsored by Puffin Books.

To correct that one living gran that wanted anything to do with us. I had a living grandfather, but he told my mum to "take that thing away!" when I was a baby, and so she did.

LittleBallOfFur · 06/10/2014 20:11

I remember reading the mr men books with my grandma. I don't recall us reading anything else, we spent more time playing board games and cards. :)

Maiyakat · 06/10/2014 21:40

Ballet Shoes - I have the very battered copy on my book shelf now and it's my comfort reading

januarysnowdrop · 06/10/2014 21:44

Johnny Crow's Garden. I think there were a couple of other Johnny Crow books as well. Rather dated picture books about animals - any one else ever come across them? Also Beatrix Potter.

LollipopViolet · 06/10/2014 22:20

Some of my fondest memories are of sitting on my granddad'a knee and him reading to me. It could be anything from school reading books to fairytales, he made the words come alive. He used to miss words out on purpose and I'd always notice - now he's gone these memories are so precious Thanks

I had two favourite series of books - one to learn the alphabet, where the book would start, for example, "Little A had a box." And then go on to describe lots of things that were in the box, all beginning with that letter. There was a book for every letter of the alphabet.

The other series was called the Butterfly Children and was about elf like creatures who lived in a wood, on a lolly stick floating in a pond.

I loved those books. What I wouldn't give to have my granddad read me one more story.

I used to read to my grandma as a child. She is deaf-mute since birth but would happily let me sit on her knee for hours reading aloud to her, even though she couldn't hear a thing. Any chance for a cuddle, probably.
She's 87 now, and my DD has began to read her. She patiently sits and 'listens'

EBearhug · 06/10/2014 22:48

Oh, I think I remember Johnny Crow. It would fit in with my grandmother's childhood, the right sort of time, so it was probably her book.

Catiinthehat · 07/10/2014 09:14

My grandparents used to read thomas the tank engine to us. They were train enthusiasts so we got the delights of Thomas and friends.

gotthemoononastick · 07/10/2014 12:37

I am an old gran myself now and still dream of a very fat Mother Goose book that got lost forever. It was pale blue and had a lovely dressed Mother Goose illustration on the cover.

A small navy blue leather book with gold lettering that taught me to pray'.Hush, hush whisper who dares...Christopher Robin is saying his prayers.' He had a navy blue dressing gown hanging behind the door.Such an exotic garment for a little girl in boiling hot Africa to imagine.

I was a very loved litttle granddaughter!

GatoradeMeBitch · 07/10/2014 12:41

The Mr Men books. Nothing especially beautiful or sentimental I'm afraid. But I was really into the Mr Men and my Granddad would draw the characters for me when we read them, so it was special to me!

HannahLI · 07/10/2014 16:01

When we were really young they used to read Spot but when we got bigger they read Roald Dahl and a favourite was Charlie and the chocolate factory. Most of all I loved when they read from Little house on the Prarie and all the adventures of Laura.

KittieCat · 07/10/2014 16:20

My nan used to read Kingsley's My Little Doll to me when I was a toddler and as a result of my demanding it regularly and my nan being compliant I learnt it by rote. This in turn led my gorgeous nan to think I could read at an extremely early age and marking me as some sort of child genius! My parents were aware of the truth of the matter but I don’t think my nan believed I was anything other her gifted granddaughter. My nan was great!

Autismmumma · 07/10/2014 18:30

I used to love staying with my grandparents, they had the best bookshelf! We'd read Swallows and Amazons and Mrs Pepperpot but they had Enid Blyton, Mr Men and all sorts.

Fleur78 · 07/10/2014 19:00

Brambles hedge and audio tape every car journey of Gobbalino the witches cat

truckingirl · 08/10/2014 18:24

The black horse @ every Enid Blyton book available??

KateOxford · 08/10/2014 22:07

Topsy and Tim books. I now read the same copies to my children and they love the simple, innocent stories and the illustrations.

PamShoo · 09/10/2014 18:52

The Adventures of Josie, Click and Bun. In the mornings when I woke up, as I was an early riser.

Clawdy · 09/10/2014 21:02

Ooh, I remember Josie,Click and Bun! Smile

confusedofengland · 10/10/2014 07:53

Mine had a book about two children in a weatherhouse, I think in Austria. Possibly called The Little Weather Girl. I loved it and at some point I hid it in a chest of drawers in their house because my grandma had a reputation for throwing things out without warning. I found it when we were clearing their house after my grandparents died and I fell in love with it all over again.
