Anyone read this? Was thinking of getting it for 12yo DS but then read some not great reviews (from teens) on GoodReads -- plus a lot of adoration. Is it well written?

It's incredibly well written. I read a lot of YA novels, and yes, I do recommend this one. It explores tough themes - the two main characters are dealing with cancer. It has a very, very strong & loyal following from its readers.

I've just read it and I agree it is well-written. It ends at what I thought was the "right" time, so would well at that age

I liked it.

DS1 (14) loved loved loved loved (insert suitable hyperbole) it.

The voice of Hazel is very well-written.

Thanks. I'll give it a go. He chooses a lot of his own reading but I like to send him in a different direction every now and then.

Very popular at dd's school - she's read others by the same author while waiting for it from the library & says they're also very good.

Another one that might be a bit different - dd (12 - yr 8) also raved about Looking at the Stars - they have books to review that their school gets sent, and she said it was stand out the best for her, despite being not at all her usual style (she's mostly into dystopian teen fic).

After all that ... he's read it anyway! He loved it, so my ideas are not far off the mark. He hasn't read Looking at the Stars, though, so I'll see what he thinks of that.

If he likes Looking at the Stars, another series that's a bit 'different' is The Misfits by James Howe - one of the books ( Totally Joe ) is written as an 'alphabet', another (Addie on the inside) in the poems of the main character - which all sounds a bit weird, but dd liked them a lot. I actually got them for her because she was struggling rather at school feeling like an odd one out, and I thought it might help her open up a bit, but I think she also likes them just as books, IYKWIM. (They're american, but I got them for her cheap from Abebooks.)

Both my 16-yo and 12-yo DDs have loved this book, and went on to read more books by Green.
