By chance DD has asked us to read a chapter book to her. She seems to be enjoying it. Any suggestions of other chapter books that might be good to read to her please?

The Magic Faraway Tree! I read it to DS2, over and over again. He loved it.

We have just discovered Mudpuddle Farm, my four year old loves it, there are plenty of pictures and some bits he is able to try to read too. I bought all six stories in one book from a charity shop, we are currently reading it for a second time.

Magic Faraway Tree, Wishing Chair, Secret Seven, Famous Five - all Enid Blyton
Some Roald Dahl like the Magic Finger, George's Marvellous Medicine, Giraffe, Pelly and Me and maybe BFG
My DS also likes Dinosaur Cove. I understand the Rainbow Magic series is popular with girls.

Jinglebells99 · 27/09/2014 22:06

Pippa Longstocking books, My Little Sister books, Milly Molly Mandy books, How to train your dragon books

sunnyrosegarden · 27/09/2014 22:08

Don't even attempt to read Rainbow Magic! I help in a library, and read a couple (we like to know what the childden are reading Wink ). Ten minutes if your life you won't get back again!

I work on the idea that I have to enjoy the book I'm reading. They can read plenty of rainbow fairies stories, and books about kittens/zombies/poo/snot/aliens when they are reading to themselves.

Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl etc are your friends at this age.

Charlottes web and Stuart little are lovely too

Elmersnewfriend · 27/09/2014 22:24

My DS loved (still loves) My Naughty Little Sister at that age.

cazzybabs · 27/09/2014 22:26

My dds at that age have enjoyed Milly Molly Mandy, Lotta (by the person that wrote Pippi longstocking), my naughtly little sister, gobbolino. the little wooden horse

Great ideas - thanks. I think I am with sunnyrosegarden, and probably doubly so if I am picking books that DH will be reading too.

Have a look at Neil Gaiman's Fortunately the the Milk. Lots of fun!

Then there is the Dixie O'Day series from Shirley Hughes

The Violet Mackerel series would be great to move onto later too.

101 Dalmatians?

nonicknameseemsavailable · 01/10/2014 20:47

we read Naughtiest Girl in the School, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bedknob and Broomstick, Worst Witch, My Super Sister, Enchanted Wood etc and Milly Molly Mandy.

MrsCurly · 01/10/2014 20:50

We're reading Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf. It's very funny and exciting too.

SkiSchoolRun · 01/10/2014 20:53

We are enjoying Dick King Smith at the moment. The Sophie series is lovely & a little more modern than the beloved Blytons.

If doing Blytons - SS is better for younger kids than FF.

Winnie the Witch is good too.

Road Dahl,
Milly Molly Mandy
Olga da Polga

Horrid Henry?

Mr Majeika by Humphrey Carpenter.
Paddington, by Michael Bond.
Sheltie by Peter Clover.
Iggy & Me is the modern day My Naughty Little Sister.
