Please help me choose a gift for a 5 year old girl

I would like to buy a book for my 5 year old cousin. The only problem is I hardly ever see her and have no idea what she is interested in!
I would like something which can be read to her and looks like a nice gift (and would obviously like to stay away from anything she might already have!)
I just don't know what could be suitable for her age. Any ideas? Are there any great new books out?
Thanks v much!

I know it won't look as nice, but a book token would eliminate the risk of duplication.

Otherwise, I'd recommend Usborne's sticker dolly dressing books. One of these could accompany the token if budget allows.

Julia Donaldson, Paper Dolls
My DD (5) has a big hardback book called "Stories for girls" which we read every fecking night loads.
Choose something you like and get a gift receipt to enclose in the book/card

Barefoot books do some beautifully illustrated collections that also come with a story CD - dd had a book of princess stories, there's a book of animal stories, various options.

Alternatively, Children Just Like Me is a lovely book and seems to really appeal to children around 5-6 or so. It has children from all around the world, with a double page spread on each one - their family, school etc. Being an usborne book there's masses of pics with captions, so its enjoyable for a pre-reading or just starting to read child to look through alone, as well as having the main text read aloud.

Thanks all - that's much appreciated and gave me lots of food for thought!

There is an guy called Robert Sabuda that makes the most amazing pop up books Alice in wonderland

The one I have linked to is on amazon but if you google image his stuff you will find lots of pictures of his amazing books.

this is lovely

Maybe a bit old for her, but I'm OK with books to grow into!

What's the ones with no real story but unlimited endings, You Choose or something? I hear they're good.

Paper Dolls is my go to book for five year olds, it's lovely.
If you are looking for something special what about this? Gorgeous illustrations, personalized story all about the child's name.

My DD adores the Robert Sabuda books. Her favourite (got when she was 5) is the Wizard of oz.

How about Nicola Davies First Book of Nature. It's wonderful. Full to the brim of activities and lots of snippets that make it a perfect dip in & out of book.

Not new but excellent is this. Cheaper here though

This set of Winnie The Pooh books is great. They can be read together at night and when she starts reading they are small enough that she can read them herself.

My DD has a lovely hardback brambly hedge book. Or there's a gift edition of pippi long stocking.
