Years 5 and 6 Girls

I have £28 to spend on books for a primary school library. I would like to get some more"challenging" reads for Year 5 and 6 girls, as I think that is where the money would be best spent. Any suggestions for old favourites, or what is popular with that age group at the moment?

Wonder - RJ Palacio
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit - Judith Kerr

Both of these texts really encourage the reader to put themselves in other peoples' shoes and help develop empathy.

School of Good and Evil (Soman Chainani) is currently also very popular with this age group and the 2nd book came out recently. The latest Skulduggery Pleasant book came out this week too.

My DD is just going into year 6 and an avid reader.
This summer she has devoured
Granny Samuri
The Borrowers
Dorky Diaries ( for about the tenth time)
Farm boy ( second time)
Friend of Foe (third time)
Oranges in No mans land (second time)
Malory towers (who knows how many times)

We spend hours in Waterstones just considering books she loves to touch and feel before making a choice.

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson. I taught year 6 once and they all read and loved it..

The lone pine adventures by Malcolm saville

What did you go for in the end Leeds?

These are brilliant suggestions. Just on amazon reviewing the books madamehooch has listed.

This summer my dd who is just about to start Y5 has read and enjoyed:

Louis Sachar (Holes and Small Steps)
Jacqueline Wilson (My Sister Jodie, Lola Rose)
Michael Morpurgo (Cool, Born to Run)
Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (possibly slightly too adult in some of the themes)
