What did you and your DCs love at that age? My DS loves colourful books with a good rythm. TIA!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear (Ill by Eric Carle) - has just the right amount of words on each page, with enough of a child friendly cliff hanger at each page turn to keep their interest. Perfect for this age group.

Lovelydiscusfish · 13/08/2014 23:33

Charlie and Lola books v popular with my dd (2.4). And they are interesting visually, so not too boring for the adult reader, too.

rockybalboa · 13/08/2014 23:36

Barry the Fish with Fingers. He LOOOOOOOVES it!

loaderloader · 15/08/2014 22:07

The Giant Jam Sandwich was loved by both of us. It is written in rhyme.

Lovelydiscusfish · 15/08/2014 22:46

We got Splat the Cat today from a charity shop, and dd absolutely loves it (not least, I think, because she is obsessed with going to school, and the book is all about this process).
Am always slightly taken aback by everyone's apparent love of "The Tiger who came to Tea". I do understand, from further research, that the whole thing is a political metaphor. But, taken at face value, as it would be by most toddlers, does it not seem a bit sexist?

Ashvis · 16/08/2014 07:06

I agree that The Tiger Who Came To Tea is a bit dated, but why not poke a bit of fun at that? When the tiger drinks all of daddy's beer we always joke, "thank goodness he didn't drink all of mummy's!" And there's isn't a boy from the grocer shop but there can be a delivery person from the supermarket. I'm not sure why you think it's sexist necessarily, some mums stay at home by choice, not because of societal pressure, and some dads go out to work. A neighbouring family I know had mum go to work and dad stayed at home and they discussed the differences between their family and the one in the book with their toddlers. For my ds though, he just finds the idea of a tiger in your house, eating all your food funny, and the drawings are lovely. I think the book has a lot of value as a tool for beginning to talk about dynamics in your own family once the child is old enough, and goodness knows what other things Sophie's daddy does at weekends? He might do a pile of housework!

Now, if you want to see people truly disgruntled over the message a book gives, look at the negative reviews of Click Clack Moo on amazon.com (not co.uk) - makes my sides ache with laughter.

ipswichwitch · 16/08/2014 07:14

The Little Mole Who Knew It Was None of His Business is DS1's firm favourite. It's a pop up book about a mole who pokes his head from underground and gets pooed on! He spends the whole book investigating all the other animals poo to work out who did it Grin

Barry the Fish With Fingers
Dinosaurs Love Underpants
And Pirates Love Underpants are also favourites

blanketyblank100 · 31/10/2014 14:29

We're loving 'Dogger' and 'Don't want to Go' by Shirley Hughes. Also 'Ginger finds a home' etc., 'Gracie the Lighthouse Cat'. 'Abigail' about a giraffe and 'Sylvia' by the same author, about a dragon.

Lovelydiscusfish · 04/11/2014 20:42

Just saw this thread again and have come back on to say that, much to my chagrin, dd now loves The Tiger who came to Tea! But I do think it's sexist, not because the man works and the woman doesn't, but because he appears to make the financial decisions (re going out to dinner) and because the beer is exclusively his!
She also loves Funnybones at the moment, which I find strange and a bit boring!

Hairy MacClary from Donaldson's Dairy, the other Lindsey Dodd books are good but that's the absolute best, great rhythm and rhyme.

Also, One Fish Two Fish, by Dr Seuss. It's his best IMO, and simple enough for that age group (but also enjoyed by this 39 year old).

We have Floss every single night. The only way we can get out of it is if he's been messing around a lot & we warn him we're 'running out of time' to read it. Usually he stops messing around at that point but sometimes we get lucky & can avoid it! It's been at least a month, if not 2, of having it every night & I'm sick of it! I've tried introducing other books but he'll still beg for Floss afterwards! Hmm
