Female hero books for toddler girl?

MademoiselleG · 11/05/2014 09:07

As the title indicates, we are looking for good, feminist books for our dd - I say we, but really dh thinks it's totally ok that she grows up wanting to be a sparkly fairy princess in pink waiting to be rescued by a superhero ( obviously male) who will also save the world ( spew).

I am looking for something that a 2-3 yo could engage with and something that portrays female heroes but doesn't necessarily belittle men either, like some of these books do.

Any suggestions in other European languages (French, German or Spanish) welcome too.

Maisy Mouse?

Ubik1 · 13/05/2014 20:25

My girls fell about cackling when she called Ronald a bum. He did deserve it though.

GrassIsSinging · 13/05/2014 20:31

Princess Smartypants

Strix · 13/05/2014 20:46

Paperbag Princess!!! The American (bum) version. The british version totally mistranslates to meaning of "bum".

MademoiselleG · 13/05/2014 20:57

Thank you for all your fantastic suggestion!

DD very aptly demanded I read her the "sparkly fairy's gran comes to tea - a glittery strawberry scented book for girls" followed by "Hello Kitty's magical castle day" - or something similar. Both books were gifts, I hasten to add. Definitely time for springtime clearing: out with the old, in with the new!

Katie Morag books - for when she's a bit older
That rabbit belongs to Emily Brown (I've just recommended that elsewhere as well - I'm not on commission, honest!)

OublietteBravo · 14/05/2014 13:29

How about 'Ingenious Jean' by Susan Chandler (about a little girl being an inventor).

TheNightIsDark · 14/05/2014 13:32

The Daisy books by Kes Gray are brilliant. There's picture books and chapter books.

Bearwantsmore · 14/05/2014 13:33

Julia Donaldson's The Princess and the Wizard is a good one where the princess rescues herself.

Bearwantsmore · 14/05/2014 13:34

And the illustrations are lovely and sparkly too ;-)

Rita the Rescuer, again, for a bit older

TwelveLeggedWalk · 14/05/2014 13:38

Also came on to say Zog
The older sister in Dogger is clever and kind and solves all the problems herself whilst also winning rosettes!

Awesome! I'm heading to waterstones right now!

The Night Pirates.

CrushedVelvet · 14/05/2014 13:44

For something a bit different, how about
Millie's Marvellous Hat
or
Eliza & the Moonchild.
Neither overtly anti-princess, but good books with female leads, both espousing the power of the imagination.

drinkingtea · 14/05/2014 13:48

Oops 'The Night Pirates' is about "rough, tough, little girl pirates and their shipmate, Tom" (they meet Tom when they steal the front of his house for disguise). Strong girls in leaderdhip roles but not at all anti boy (they out-smart grown-up pirates). DS2's favourite book for about 6 months at age 2, suited to 2-4 year olds.

BlueChampagne · 14/05/2014 16:37

Cinderella's Bum

gamescompendium · 14/05/2014 19:58

The Bog Baby is lovely and has 2 female friends in it. I think there's a follow up, the King of Tiny Things or something like that.

Britchic · 16/05/2014 22:13

I recommended this on another thread…. a new book called Marmaduke the very different dragon. It's got a princess called Meg in it who is very un-princessy and doesn't care about being different - great role model. HTH.

MademoiselleG · 17/05/2014 15:16

Thank you all for the suggestions, some amazing ones there!

So far, I've bought
The paper bag princess - accidentally got a toddler version but it's actually brilliant and seems to be dd's new favourite book. Love the ending, made me laugh so much!
Princess Smartypants: again, what a brilliant ending! Dh not so convinced but I love it and so does dd.
Zog: fantastic. Love the drawing too.

More to come I am sure!
