Could anyone recommend some books for my 13 years old DD to read over the Easter Holiday? DD is a fast reader and loves fiction books. She has finished Harry Porter series and Hunger Games which she loved to read. I would like her to explore different types of books. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Animals of farthingwood

Judy Blume

Marple/poirot/Sherlock Holmes

Dick Francis

Somewhere a cat is waiting

Captain correlis mandolin

I had rather eclectic tastes at 13....!

The dark materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman are brilliant.

It’s a bit of an eclectic mix, but I would suggest:

Wonder, by R.J. Palacio (although you might need to dig out the Kleenex for part of it);

A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness (ditto. It's popular at the moment);

'The Fault in Our Stars' and 'Looking for Alaska', by John Greene;

The City of Ember series, by Jeanne Du Prau;

'The Secret Countess', 'A Company of Swans' and 'A Song for Summer' by Eva Ibbotson;

'Goodnight Mister Tom' and 'Back Home' by Michelle Magorian;

The Declaration (series), by Gemma Malley;

My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece, by Annabel Pitcher;

Skellig, by David Almond;

A Christmas Carol (among others) by Charles Dickens;

(...and you might want to check out Carmen Reid's 'Cross My Heart', John Boyne's 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' and some of the Siobhan Dowd books).

There are also some good suggestions by other posters :)

The Little White Horse, and other boods by Elizabeth Goudge. And how about Daphne Du Maurier?

BlueChampagne · 16/04/2014 16:25

books, not boods of course

Lots of brilliant suggestions

DD* likes the Penderwicks books by Jeanne Birdsall

Kate Saunders

Gallagher Girls series (Ally Carter)

Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson books)

Geek Girls books (Holly Smale)

Ali Sparkes books eg Shapeshifter series

The "Gone" series by Michael Grant. Brilliant books, hardly a moment without action etc.

I liked the first divergent book but found the second one a bit boring tbh, not even started the third.

Might be a bit dated now but I loved Lois Duncan ( I know what you did last summer) and Paula Dazinger at that age.

PedantMarina · 16/04/2014 17:06

YY to Pratchett. the Tiffany Aching stories are perfect for her age, but even the "grown up" stuff is not beyond the capabilities of a gal who loves to read. Suggest also Monstrous Regiment, but don't say why.

Take her to the library and let her chose, I used to love doing this as a teen.

The Greengage Summer - by Rumer Godden. A mother takes her ungrateful offspring to visit the WWI battlefields. She falls ill and the children/teens are left more or less to their own devices in a French hotel. Part thriller, part romance, part rite of passage, it has something for everyone. Still read it now from time to time.

Love Greengage Summer
