Suggestions for a book I can read to/with DD

I'm trying to add one to one time with dd1 (7) and thought that reading a chapter of a book that maybe she'd not read by herself would be good. ATM we've got into the habit of her reading by herself while I get dd2 to sleep, but I'd like to then read to her afterwards.

She's in year 3 and a very good reader, and has read all of the Roald Dahl books etc. I'm struggling to think of a book we could start with Shock

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

The ones I've read to ds (age 6yo) in the last year include:
Little house books
Various Arthur Ransome (just finished Winter Holiday)
Williard Price
Storm Ahead (Monica Edwards-he likes weather!)
Mystery at Witchend (WWII adventure very into WWII)
Demon Island
Enid Blyton Adventure series

Some of those are from my collection and are dated, but he loves them, even if occasionally he's been hiding under his duvet saying "stop, too scary... no go on... what happens next". Grin If it's really gripping at the chapter end he'll sometimes read the next chapter or so to himself.

First couple of Harry Potters are also popular.

Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr is something I loved at that age, planning to read it to my dd when she's old enough...12 weeks at moment Grin

Obvious I know but has she read the David Walliams books? How about the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe?

IndianMummy · 23/01/2014 10:51

Second the Lion the witch and the wardrobe, plus, these went down well with my younger DD:
Charlotte's Web
Nina and the Travelling Spice Shed
Nina and the Kung Fu Adventure
The Girl Who Circumnavigated the World in a Ship of her own Making
I've found that reading to my DDs is a great idea too so enjoy it! (when my other DD turned 12 she finally put a stop to it, but we got through all of the Hobbit and His Dark Trilogy doing it!)

Pippi Longstocking

pollyputthekettleonagain · 23/01/2014 13:04

not pippi longstocking... its a bit bizarre, and the children cant follow it properly. the story is just too random!

Seeline · 23/01/2014 13:10

My Dd loves Pippi longstocking - but I suppose she is a bit random at times Grin
Each to their own I suppose

LeBearPolar · 23/01/2014 13:17

At that age DS liked the circus stories by Enid Blyton. He also liked Gobbolino the Witch's Cat and The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse by Ursual Moray Williams.

Also, if you can find it, The Cat Who Wanted To Go Home.

I loved Journey to the Centre of the Earth and The Secret Garden. Oh and Peter Pan.
I have fond memories of my mother reading us books every night - we always looked forward to it.
