Children on the oregan trail was a favourite of mine at about age 10. Joan Lingard books, across the barricades etc. I loved the babysitters club books too.

Dad's favourite books so far are anything by Julia Donaldson, and her current favourites are the rainbow magic series written under the name daisy meadows.

Another vote for the What Katy Did/At School/Next books with the addition of Clover as it ties up some lose ends nicely. (Don't bother with In The High Valley though).

Ooh ancientbuchanan I loved the Roger Lancelyn Green mythologies. DD1 doing Ancient Greeks next term, will be so delighted if it grabs her.

PlateSpinningAtAllTimes · 04/01/2014 08:10

So many brilliant suggestions on this thread - makes me want to read all of my childhood favourites again! Particularly Narnia, Indian in the Cupboard, the Hobbit....

Thought I'd add: anything by Dick King-Smith, particularly George Speaks, the Sheep Pig and the Queen's Nose.
The Asterix comics (do they count in this thread?) - I loved them as a kid and read them all.
Favourites as a little child: There's a Hippopotumus on our roof eating cake
The best nest
(both of these now loved by DS too)

Mignonette · 04/01/2014 08:38

YY to

The Phantom Tollbooth
The Laura Ingalls Wilder books
Charlotte's Web.

And my daughter loved 'There's A Hippopotamus' Plate. Good reminder!

changejustforyou · 04/01/2014 15:01

Funny, none of 3 dc like Harry Potter, Winny the Pooh.
I myself also not keen on Swallows and Amazons (well some better than others).
Great fan (dc less so) of Astrid Lingren.
Eragon

Bohemond · 04/01/2014 15:22

I donated all my sweet valley high and babysitters club books. They made me angry I wasn't a blonde cheerleader living in America.

I frequently get angry I didn't get an American childhood like books made it out to be Hmm
