Can you recommend me a book for a 6 year old about science/nature....

My just 6 year old is driving me up the wall asking questions about volcanoes, waves, types of rocks and how they were made, etc. I'm not really that good at such things (although I now know why the sky is blue - it's complex!). Can anyone recommend me any good books? My local library doesn't seem to have much for her age, only more complex books. Thanks!

My DGC all seem to like Usborne Books

The 'I Wonder Why' series are great. There are usually lots on Amazon, either new, secondhand or in sets of 12 or so.

That "I wonder why" series looks great except one review on amazon quote it as saying"Why is the ocean salty?" Answer: "Because there's salt in it..."
Lol. DD won't be happy with that answer! Will look at Usborne...

The bookpeople always have a few good science book collections on their website. I got a I wonder why collection from there.

Much cheaper than on amazon

Thanks all, that has given me some good pointers!

DD who is 6 got given this Junior Encyclopedia for Xmas, and has been glued to it for days. She reads it in the car and regales us with fascinating facts!

Usborne definitely. we also have some random ones we have picked up in 'the works' or bargain book shops, childrens encyclopaedias etc.

I've just got round to looking up why is the sea salty, and yes it does start with "Seawater tastes salty because it has salt in it!" (which I guess wouldn't occur to some) and goes on "The salt is the same stuff people sprinkle on food. Most of it comes from rocks on the land. Rain washes the salt into rivers which carry to to the sea." Plus lots of other stuff.

I still think they're a good series but yes, Usborne do great books too.

The Pocket Scientist books from Usborne are great for my 6yo. There is a blue one and a red one.

Ooh Little Bird has a great offer on National Geographic Kids subscriptions today!! Sounds like it might be useful? Your DS sounds ace Smile

DS (also 6yo) loves the Usborne ones. There's also Horrible Geography about volcanoes and stuff which he read last term. He found the ones from the book people a bit simple.
We also do a lot of looking up on the internet. He's learnt to type his question in the internet and add "for kids", which gives it in a format he likes.
BBC also has a good animated guide to things like earthquakes and volcanoes.

My 6 year old has been engrossed in Why Is Snot Green? (which tackles loads of sciencey questions, not just the bogey-related ones) - she would recommend it!
