Eragon

A Song of Ice and Fire

That endless series by Robert Jordan

soontobeslendergirl · 30/12/2013 22:04

What was it he liked about them?

Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy maybe?

The Chaos Walking Trilogy

The Abhorsen Trilogy

The Original Magician trilogy

BrokenBananaTantrum · 30/12/2013 22:08

Alison Croggan's 4 books starting with The Gift are brilliant.

BlueChampagne · 07/01/2014 13:50

If he hasn't read them already:

Terry Pratchett (bit of a Tolkein antidote)
Ursula Le Guin
Mary Renault and Robert Graves if historical fiction appeal

Would he like to read adult books suitable to his age - I have a reader who loved Q&A by Vikas Swarup (the book Slumdog Millionaire was based on) and also The Kite a Runner by Khaled Hosseini as well as really enjoying Lord of the Rings - they are very different to Lord of The Rings but are great books.

BaconAndAvocado · 11/01/2014 23:33

Yes booksteen I think he would.

Either titles he's read recently are Life of Pi and Schindlers Ark.

Love the idea of Terry Pratchett (for DS, I personally don't get on with him)

Where would be a good place to start?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2014 23:48

The logical place to start with Pratchett is The Colour of Magic, but the first couple in the series aren't really the best. The books do stand alone more or less - maybe Guards, Guards (I'm not biased...)

(Well, actually the logical place to start with Pratchett is the Bromeliad trilogy and then the Tiffany Aching series but they're aimed younger.)

An alternative to starting in on the Discworld series might be Good Omens perhaps (co-written with Neil Gaiman)

Lottystar · 12/01/2014 12:22

The hunger games
His dark materials trilogy
Game of thrones is very good but perhaps a bit sexy for a 15 year old?

BaconAndAvocado · 12/01/2014 20:05

If the books are anything like the tv series then, yes lotty , they are definitely too sexy for a 15 yo!

AceyT · 12/01/2014 20:08

The belgariad, by David endings, anything by Anne macaffery, esp the pern series, or Mercedes lackey. I loved those when I was 15/16.

AceyT · 12/01/2014 20:08

Oops, Eddings, stupid iPad

AceyT · 12/01/2014 20:13

Or thinking about it a bit more, he might enjoy David Gemmell's Druss the legend type books. More sword than sorcery, IYSWIM

TheGreatHunt · 12/01/2014 20:16

Robert Jordan's wheel of time

Robin Hobbs - Fitz and Fool trilogy

LifeHuh · 12/01/2014 20:18

Why not just take him to your nearest bookshop/library and abandon him in the sci-fi and fantasy section for a bit??
If he needs suggestions though The Wheel of Time series- Robert Jordan, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant - Stephen Donaldson.Terry Pratchett is great, but not really like Lord of the Rings in any way...

TheGreatHunt · 12/01/2014 20:19

Oh and Terry brooks, shannara series.

BaconAndAvocado · 13/01/2014 22:02

That makes sense life !

He's currently reading the God Delusion and enjoying it.

Forgot to mention he likes a bit of non-fiction and science type books.

Thanks all, got lots to get stuck into!

Thanks all for loads and loads of suggestions.

He's now reading the God Delusion, and enjoying it. Forgot to mention he likes non fiction/science books too!

BlueChampagne · 17/01/2014 16:11

Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything".

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2014 16:24

Oh, I'd forgotten, I'd thought that too! If he likes science books, Stephen Jay Gould is very readable - some more than others, can't remember which is which now TBH though.
