is the book thief suitable to read to my 11 year old?

my 11 year old still enjoys being read to (he also reads to himself) . we have really enjoyed the curious incident of the dog in the night time, and quite enjoyed oliver twist and cider with rosie. is the book thief suitable for me to read to him? any other ideas please? I want to read books he wouldn't tackle himself, but don't want to read the classics too early and put him off for life!

It's a beautiful book but a bit dark - death tells the story and there is the real horror of the Jewish holocaust.

Books that have been around for a while that might suit are The Oustsiders by SE Hinton or Call of the Wild by Jack London or The Empireof the Sun by JG Ballard

More recent books which might appeal are Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner or Out of shadows by Jason Wallace or Being Billy by Phil Earle - they are not light books but are teen book and they make you think as well as being enjoyable.

Wonderful book but I would leave it a few years.

Colin Fischer by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz has the flavour of a follow-on from the Curious Incident but enough originality to stand on its own as a fun read for boys who like detail. Colin has Asperger's. Colin Fischer

I would agree with everyone else, great book but leave it a couple of years.

If you particularly wanted books that dealt with the same issues what about I am David, here I was there and Friedrich here Also the Silver Sword which doesn't deal with the Holocaust but is set in Poland during 2WW here

All of them are probably a better fit.
