I have just seen author Michelle Paver on BBC Breakfast talking about her new book, The Burning Shadow. It sounded a great read but I am wondering what age range it is suitable for? Has anyone or their DCs read her first book The Outsiders and could advise if they would be suitable for a 11yro boy?

Yes it's suitable for an 11 year old - the story starts suddenly so you can feel a bit lost on the first few pages but its a good story. I reviewed it on my website and gave it a 12+ age recommendation but that was because of the start not the content. she writes well and her research is quite meticulous. www.booksteensandmagazines.com/view/gods-and-warriors

Thanks booksteensand magazines that is really helpful. I am going to order both for my nephew and take them with me when I visit and we can read together. Can you suggest any other books for 11yro boy particularly humerous ones (he used to love Horrid Henry but has outgrown them now). Thank you.

Have a look at:

The Bodyguard: Hostage by Chris Bradford (action but not funny ha-ha)
Mortal Chaos by Matt Dickinson (I really like these books, short chapters, quick reads, action)

I can't think of older versions of Horrid Henry - the Wimpy Kid series is the closest but its been around a while so he may have read them

Michelle Paver is great. I don't know about the title you mention, but Wolf Brother, by her, is a fab read; my daughter read it a year ago - when she was 12, so I think an 11 year old could prob. handle it as well. Well worth throwing that his way at some point too...

The Jeremy Strong books are funny and me DS enjoyed them at that age. Eion Colfer is good too. Probably best known for Artemis Fowl, but has written many others too.

Frank Cottrell Boyce might be worth checking out too.

Thanks all, I am going to have a trip to Waterstones. Just the thing for a miserable wet day!
