Do you remember Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume? I just reread it, and a load of Paula Danziger books

and TE ages surprising well.

So sad. Found I sympathised a LOT more with the mum than I did when I read as a child. Also it was a bit political - all the stuff about Los Alamos and her Uncle's views on why have nuclear weapons - which I also missed when I was younger.

(Also been rereading Paula Danziger, wish I hadn't. Loved as a child but now - so poorly written! And VERY dated. The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, The Pistachio Prescription, etc)

Wish Judy Blume books were available on Kindle!

I thought the mum was great - when I was younger I thought she was flakey. She had just lost her husband ffs. I'm not impressed by my younger self right now!

I LOVED tiger eyes, it used to make me cry, she was so sad, just awful. And she took her blood stained halter neck to the canyon and piled stones up on it. She seemed so grown up to me but was meant to be what? About 15 or 16?

Wait, how is your friend's cat in it? That's a brilliant tenuous claim to fame. It's directed by JB's son, apparently.

She is a sophomore, is that 15/16? I think so.

When I go on my Grand Tour of USA and Canada as Influenced by Books I have Read, New Mexico is on the itinerary because of Tiger Eyes!

I loved Tiger Eyes, it made me cry every time I read it. I also loved Paula Danziger books - I think I may be a teacher because of being inspired by the cool one who wouldn't say the pledge of allegiance. There's a book fair here at the weekend - think I'll hunt for these.

I MET Judy Blume once. We talked for ages and then she sent me some books.

I have no idea how I managed to even speak to her (there may have been a few high-pitched moments...) she was such a hero of mine and so kind and witty in real life. And not at all patronising (I was about 17 at the time and probably a bit of a knob).

Unfortunately I read most of her books in the library so don't own a lot - might have to start building up a collection to re-read!

I was such a huge fan of Judy Blume when I was younger. I recall reading 'Forever' at an inappropriate age and hiding it so my mum wouldn't come across it Grin But Tiger Eyes was good, had a different tone to many of the other books.

I love Judy Blume books and still have all my battered copies around somewhere. I've tried to get 12yr old DD to read them over the years but she prefers Jacqueline Wilson.

Judy Blumes adult novels are very readable too (Wifey and Summer Sisters I think are the 2 I have read)

Tiger Eyes is my favourite Judy Blume book. I loved it, and then went on to read all of her others. I credit Forever for teaching me that women could orgasm, when Katherine says "And I came too." I remember having to read and re-read to understand! Grin

I just finished Tiger Eyes today - because I saw there was a new movie based on it and wondered why, given so much time has passed since it was written. I agree, its aged well.
Its so beautifully written, too - so strong emotionally but with a real lightness of touch.

I LOVED Tiger Eyes. So sad and beautifully written. Loved the way she used the present tense to differentiate from the scenes when the dad's killed.

When will the film be out in the UK?

I have my old JB books and my dds have read some. Middle dd loves Starring Sally J Freedman, as did I.

I like both of these writers but Judy Blume more and her books have accompanied me in my head ever since I read them. Blubber, which was about bullying, has stuck with me forever. And Deenie where she had scoliosis and had to wear that brace type contraption. Then there was Are you there God. Loved them all and can remember them acutely...
