What books does your 3 yo like?

My twins are turning 3 soon and I'd like to supplement their book collection. They both love books and I feel they're growing out of the ones we have at home. What would you recommend for this age? They currently like Maisy, Topsy and Tim, any recommendations would be very welcome.

Winnie the Witch, Charlie and Lola, Kipper, Mr Men, those books about Dazzling Diggers etc that they said were man-porn on Top Gear, Little Red Train books

Grab a load of stuff from local library and see what sticks.

All the Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler books are fab; The Gruffalo, The Snail & the Whale, Monkey Puzzle etc. Great eye-catching pics and the rhyming really helps keep them interested.

Check out Oliver Jeffers (author) on Amazon. We love "Lost and Found" best. Also, Julia Donaldson of course, but "The Smartest Giant on Town" is a perennial favourite - got ot for his 3rd birthday, now 4.5 and we must read it at least a couple of times a week still!

The duck books! Great fun. Duck in the truck, fix it duck, hit the ball duck and captain duck. I love reading them to him. He also likes dr Seuss (I hated it initially but it's growing on me).

Yes You Choose! Fabulous detail for endless chattering. Also a vote for Little Red Train by Benedict Blathwayt, incredible detail in the illustrations. Dogger and the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes. Little Rabbit by Harry Horse. Peepo and Each Peach Pear Plum also for details ... 3 yos love to "find" secrets in pictures. Meg and Mog.

Thank you for all the suggestions! Will definitely look into those. I remember Meg and Mog and Alfie from my childhood so will look forward to reading those again. They love Each Peach Pear Plum - a firm favourite, and of course the Gruffalo and other Julia D.

The original Octonauts books (pre tv series) are beautiful, again lots of detail and humour.

Mine most loves old Ladybird fairytale books that I get from charity shops - The Little Red Hen, The Three Billygoats Gruff, etc.

I hate reading Octonauts books - the pictures are gorgeous but the prose is really awkward.

My three year old especially loves Tootles the Taxi.

Tunip, agree re Octonauts (although I note your name!) DCs adore that programme but the books are tiresome.

DS (3) loves The Giant Jam Sandwich, anything by Mo Willems (currently Leonardo the Terrible Monster but also Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and all the pigeon series), and anything by Nick Sharratt (Shark in the Park, and Nick Sharratt's retelling of fairy stories - we've got Goldilocks and The Three Billy Goats Gruff) and Shhh! by Sally Grindley.

DD is 2.5 . She loves Charlie and Lola, also books about animals. And there's a lovely set of three art books by Lucy Micklethwaite that she pours over.

Her absolute favourite book is a handmedown from DH's sister. The Dirty Old Teddy by Enid Blyton. She has that nearly every day!

gaelicsheep - I'm always trying to order those Lucy Micklethwaites from the library to get a look at them, but they seem to be like hen's teeth. I'm sure I personally would like them - interesting that your dd likes them, mine is 2.5 too.

The Mog books by Judith Kerr. And Splat The Cat by Rob Scotton (I think that's his name). DS (age 3) has also started liking longer books - so far the James Herriot kids' stories (Blossom Comes Home) and The Mousehole Cat.

Dd isn't 3 yet but loves all the Julia Donaldson ones - especially a squash and a squeeze, Tom Thumb, Cinderella, aliens love underpants, jolly postman.

Both kids love 'before you sleep' - great illustrations and written by a bereaved dad BUT not downbeat at all just very very heartfelt and always reminds me to give the kids that extra few minutes for another story / cuddle at bedtime. this is the website about the books but think we got ours from wh smiths. There are more books now in the series but we haven't got round to ordering those.

TheSurgeonsWife - they're pretty good. I can't say it's always an obvious selection and I keep meaning to do some research on the artists myself. A wide range of styles are represented, not always that easy on the eye. At least one example is plain creepy!
