Chapter books to read to 5 year old dd

We've just started reading some simple chapter books to dd at bedtime - The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and the Hen Who Wouldn't Give Up which we've really enjoyed. She also loved my old copy of My Naughty Little Sister and Bad Harry. Does anyone have any recommendations of other books we could read? These are lovely because they are gentle and quite simple but start the enjoyment of a story that unravels over several nights.

Thank you!

We've been reading Ronald Dahl books, we started in fantastic mr fox, which I think went a bit over her head, but we've done the witches, Matilda and now on the BFG and she really enjoys them.

Think we might try the owl who was afraid of the dark next, I really liked it as a kid.

I am reading the Magic Faraway Tree books to ds (6y) at the moment and he is enjoying them.

George's Marvellous Medicine is a great Roald Dahl book.

Melmagpie · 25/11/2012 21:08

thank you. I'm not sure she's ready for Roald Dahl - he's a little dark for her tastes I think - but maybe I should give a try. I never read the Magic Faraway books - will check out - thanks.

DS is a young 5 and has been into Roald Dahl for a while now. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is probably the best one to start with - who can resist that!!

We have read the faraway tree and alot of Roald Dahl books, we started with the worst witch books which went down really well.

suebfg · 25/11/2012 21:10

Chronicles of Narnia is popular too with Ds

We started with magic faraway tree books too, they can be fairly repetitive which is probably better for them than for the person reading! Roald Dahl ones are good to move onto, they are a bit darker but my ds1 enjoyed them.

We also read the worst witch and the wishing chair collection. They all brought back some amazing memories for me, especially the illustrations in the worst witch which I was fascinated with as a child.

Winnie the Witch

Mud puddle Farm by Michael Morpurgo

Horrid Henry?

Meerkat Madness

Sophie books by Dick King Smith, astrid Lindgren Lotta books, all the other naughty little sister ones, Milly Molly Mandy, Enid Blyton Amelia Jane books, the penguin who wanted to find out, Anne Fine Jamie and Angus books, Brigid Lucy (can't remember author), Anna Hibiscus. All the above enjoyed by my dd2 who also adores my naughty little sister and would not cope with the darkness of roald dahl!

Melmagpie · 25/11/2012 22:24

Thanks all, lots to check out!

Milly molly Mandy is very gentle and innocent. If she likes My naughty little sister she will probably like MMM.

The Sam Pig books by Alison Uttley are very gentle, oldfashioned books which I loved when I was a small child - they are still available, I've got them for DS1 & 2

Gobbolino the witch's cat & Adventures of the little wooden horse - both Ursula Moray Williams

The Moomin series by Tove Jansson

Esio Trot is a Roald Dahl book but not his usual dark humour, so would probably be ok for a 5 yr old, it is about tortoises....

The Arabel & Mortimer the raven series by Joan Aiken is also good for reading to that age group I think

Melmagpie · 28/11/2012 21:15

lovely, thank you.

Jenny Valentine has written a series of books called Iggy & Me, which is a sort of modern My Naughtiest Little Sister.

There is also the Sheltie series by Peter Clover, about a Shetland Pony. There are loads of them! He also does a series about donkeys, but I can't remember what it is called!
