Best audiobook for 8yr old boy

He loves reading Roald Dahl, have bought him some Mr Gum to read, but would like to get him an audiobook too. Any recommendations?

Cressida Cowell's How To Train Your Dragon series is excellent. We all love them, so funny and brilliant stories. They are narrated by David Tennant and he does it very well.

Ds2 who's 9 (just) has in the past few months listened to hitchikers guide to the galaxy / mostly harmless/ restaurant at the end of the universe etc. as audiobooks (-actually on cd then put on his Mp3) He's also read all the Cressida Cowell books (yes, all) and we're trying to decide what audiobooks next too!!

Will look into the Terry Pratchett and How to Train your Dragon (he loved the film).

I order them from our library (free to order from anywhere in the county) & it costs 50p for 3 weeks - much cheaper than buying them even if you don't finish in 3 weeks & need to renew them!

You have to pay £1 for all reservations in our county, but even so, agree it would be cheaper! This is for a Christmas present though

Remembered another good audio book - Lionboy by Zizou Corder. Its an adventure type story with a boy who can talk to cats (and lions!).

We love the David Walliams ones - they are very Dahl in format.

I've had a look at the David Walliams ones too, not sure of the content though...

What worries you about the content of Walliams? DS1 has read them aged 8 and 9 and although he only read about 50% to me, I thought they were just a more modern version of Dahl rather than anything to worry about.

I love the fact there is a boy wearing dresses, a "tramp" who turns out to be anything bit, terribly snobby politicians - and DS doesn't (yet) view these things as anything other than a cracking story.

Oh, and if you read His Dark Materials the audiobooks are great - joined Audible on trial offer just to get them for £3.99 each.

I had heard there were references to porn mags which I might have difficulty in explaining if asked . Otherwise, I'm intrigued, I have to say. I have decided to go for the How to Train Your Dragon for now, thanks for the ideas all, they are stored on the Amazon wishlist!

There is more than one Mr Gum book - Ds loves them and the audiobooks make long journeys so much better.

Ds1 read the first one at school, we've got him the second one for Christmas. Will be a useful series I think!

I know you have bought some Mr Gum books but they are worth getting on audio cd as well. They are one of the few books that can be listened to again and again and again. There are so many gags and intricate wordplay - it's like listening to a very clever stand up routine. I don't know what borough you are in, but in ours (Barnet) you can rent for free digital audiobook downloads of children's books from the library and its a very large selection.

Google your local library and search for digital download. Why it's in some boroughs and not others I do not know, and why they offer this services I do not know either :) but I shouldn't complain.

You can in my area, but not to a kindle, which is what I have

WE have the Mr Gum set packed away for Christmas. I would also recommend The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle. Very funny!
