Y2 DS is a bit bored of Horrid Henry. What else can he read?

I know lots of boys at this age love Horrid Henry. He loves it too but I think if we had another story for a change it would have been more interesting. Is there anything as good as Horrid Henry? Thank you.
We read books from school too.

My ds moved on to the Beast Quest series. I hated them but he loved them. Then How to Train Your Dragon, Tumtum and Nutmeg, easier Michael Morpurgo ones and Harry Potter.

Mr Gum, Jack Stalwart, Dinking Dings.

Dirtie Bertie books are in a similar vein as Horrid Henry (but much nicer IMO) - my Ds much preferred them. Also Captain Underpants books were popular.

Have you taken him to the library or bookshop?

amck5700 · 18/09/2012 12:42

Also any of the Jeremy strong books e.g. my brothers famous bottom would be good. Scream street series was also enjoyed by my boys.

Gumby · 18/09/2012 12:44

The best thing to do is take him to the library & let him choose

They're are loads of books in a similar vein - dirty Bertie, Jeremy strong

He might like famous five & definitely first 3 Harry Potters

Astrosaurs?

Lovefruitsandvegs · 18/09/2012 14:43

Thank you for suggestions. We have been to the libraries many times but not everything is available in one place. Sometimes it is better to browse online catalogue, order it and then see when it arrives. But I am interested in your suggestions too. I would then check these books in the library catalogue.
He likes naughty characters like Horrid Henry but I hope he does not copies him. He has a younger brother too.

Another vote for Jeremy Strong books, my DS loves 'The hundred mile an hour dog' series.

TunipTheVegemal · 18/09/2012 14:49

Either read him some of the William books by Richmal Crompton or get him the audiobooks, then when his reading is good enough he can read them himself.

snigger · 18/09/2012 14:51

I agree with How To Train Your Dragon - how about Little Darlings series, Series of Unfortunate Events or Horrid Histories?

As I'm in Scotland - what's Y2? Is that about 6 yrs old?

Tgger · 18/09/2012 20:48

Jeremy Strong- loads of books, Dirtie Bertie, Mr Majeika, Oliver Moon, Roald Dahl
Library- DS picks all sorts there that would pass my radar as I've never heard of, probably wouldn't pick up for him but he has chosen himself so is a winner.

Many thanks again. I really appreciate your suggestions!
We will see what is available in our library. He is pretty happy with Horrid Henry and his school books (fortunately they have lots of reading books) but he is not passionate about reading. I know some of his classmates read on their own because they just love Horrid Henry that much. May be he is just not ready yet. He is going to be 7 this year. I used to read Roald Dahl to him last year but both of us got a bit bored after reading a fourth book.

Have you thought of going down the non-fiction route? I have been gathering old Ladybird books which my ds loves. (Lots of the facts are probably wrong, especially on the dinosaur one, but I don't think that matters much for this purpose.)

Lovefruitsandvegs · 19/09/2012 14:33

TunipTheVegemal, I have been thinking of buying him a few Ladybird books from The Book People today. They have a good offer. He likes reading about nature and often at school we would go for non-fiction stories. He likes true stories :)

Are the new Ladybirds any good? We like the ones from my childhood because they are jam-packed with facts in a way that modern books for children rarely are.
DS is also keen on those Collins Gem guides to things. His favourite one is 'Sharks' - it makes for a dreary bedtime story from my perspective when I am just reading out long lists of shark lengths, diets, depths they live at etc but he seems to like it Grin
We recently picked up a Horrible Geography book on volcanoes that went down very well.
