I let DS1, also 6, choose. sometimes I read to him from the book he's reading to himself, sometimes he wants something different. He gets a chapter from me at bedtime every night.

Read him something that is just a bit to difficult for him to read by himself. A chapter at bedtime is perfect.

I like to read to them something that is above their own reading ability.

What about Roald Dahl and some of the Michael Morpurgo novels. Stig of the Dump is great, as well.

Also, for himself, he might like the Beast Quest books.

Go with the flow. If you've got any books that are a bit tricky for him to read to himself then maybe try one of those, a chapter a night. Maybe one of the classics- we've just got a children's version of Wind in the Willows for example that DS would find very tricky and it's lovely to read to him. Or you can read him a chapter of what he's reading and leave him to continue. Did this the other day with a Jeremy Strong book we are reading to DS.

Have a browse in the library and then you can find something you both love Smile.
