Hi, I want to buy a present for a little girl who's very into knights/princesses at the moment. Any recommendations? Thanks.

The Barefoot Book of Princesses is absolutely beautiful and would make a nice gift IMO. I think they also do a Barefoot Book of Knights come to think of it.

If you want a longer storybook, then The Ordinary Princess by MM Kaye is great as a bedtime story to read aloud.

Thanks very much, I'll check those out - sound great. Any other suggestions?

Irritatingly, so many such books are marketed at pink fairies for girls and brave knights for boys, with dull content.

The kiss that missed, the three wishes and Good night sleep tight by David Melling here are great books about Knights that girls like too. although they're picture books, they are beautifully illustrated and not too young for many 5 year olds.

The Dollhouse Fairy is a less conventional than most picture book about a fairy. Really lovely. here

Otherwise Usbourne do nice early readers (though many too gender-stereotyped for my kids liking) but this telling of George and the dragon is good here

I agree that the Barefoot books are good. You can get some editions with story cd included, which is very popular with this age group.

Do the parents of the 5 year old a favour and don't buy Rainbow Magic Fairy books!

Ooh, if you want early reader/simple
paperback then my 5 year old is enjoying the Rescue Princess books here by Paula Harrison.

I would second the Barefoot Book of Princesses , and also The Kiss That Missed - I love that one !

Sir Charlie Stinkysocks is also good fun

or The Paperbag Princess is another fun alternative .

DD1 has a book called 'The Worst Princess' by Anna Kemp, it is a brilliant book.

You're all wonderful, thank you Smile. I will spend some time on Amazon tomorrow.

Also recommend "Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants" and Julia Donaldson's "Zog".

The Princess Smartypants are great for on the surface being about pricesses, but actually having good feminist morals, they are great Grin

pollycazalet · 05/09/2012 18:17

We loved "The Kiss that missed" at this age.

jkklpu · 05/09/2012 18:21

Julia Donaldson's 'Zog', if your dd's not too old for JD books

Talyra · 05/09/2012 18:31

The Paperbag Princess! it's a classic, and the princess fights the dragon to rescue the prince!

The princess creativity book is great (if you google it on amazon it will come up) loads of lovely things to make and do in the book, and although princess themed, really well pu together etc. my dd has one and uses it often.
