Hi there,

My MIL would like to buy my DD a collection of books for her birthday, she will be 5.

Has anyone got any ideas?

We have the Dr Seus collection at my folks which she loves, but i wondered if there were any books ie that we could read a couple of chapters a night and get through it in a week or two, is 5 to young to expect her to like the Alice in Wonderland collection or something similar.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

TIA

magic faraway tree, rainbow magic (if you can stomach the repetitive story lines!), the books by Davis Walliams

Roald Dahl books good too

Faraway tree, wishing chair, BFG.

The Anna Hibiscus books by Atinuke are lovely stories for bedtime reading.

Or if you prefer something old fashioned, what about Milly Molly Mandy or My Naughty Little Sister.

I second Enid Blyton Faraway tree, or maybe Mr Pinkwhistle or Mr Twiddle books? (If they're still printed - I used to love them as a kid!)

Also Roald Dahl - we have a lovely box set of his books!

This would make a lovely birthday present - Rumer Godden's doll stories - 7 books in one hardback, illustrated by Jane Ray. DD (5) has read The Fairy Doll and loved it. This is great, because a lot of these were out of print. It's not out until 13th September, but you can preorder it.

Also seconding Takver's Anna Hibiscus recommendation (thanks - got them on your recommendation and DD has loved them - she wanted them at a single sitting!)

My naughty little sister and milly Molly Mandy are DD's favourites (she is 4).

vesela · 02/09/2012 21:35

Pan Macmillan (who are publishing the Rumer Godden collection I linked to above) are also republishing lots of Milly Molly Mandy books, I noticed.

JollyHockeyStick · 02/09/2012 21:41

Mr Meddle was always a hit in our house. Or Noddy.

GoodHeavensNo · 02/09/2012 21:42

My 5 yo currently loves the naughiest girl in school books, my naughty little sister books, naughty amelia jane (do you see a theme here...)

Also the magic faraway tree books. My sister has given her some rainbow fairy ones but I've managed to avoid these for now Grin

She doesn't like Roald Dahl books because she gets too upset when bad things happen to the children (as they invariably do).
