Recommendations for 5 year old DS1

DS1 will be 5 in a couple of weeks. He's got bored with the Julia Donaldson type stuff that he enjoyed at 3/4 and I am looking for some new books. This is wholly separate from school reading - this is still stories to be read to him until he wants to take over.

He loves Roald Dahl but a little more variety would be good. Any recommendations gratefully received :)

Stig of the Dump was very much adored by my son.

My son enjoyed the Enid Blyton books like the Castle of Adventure - dated and I kept altering parts of the text regarding the female roles but the storylines are understandable at that age. Also he really enjoyed the Magic Faraway tree books.

Mr Majeika series by Humphrey Carpenter

Dick King-Smith books

How about the Richard Scary books? Boys seem to love the detail in those. Julia Donaldson also does some good 'older' books such as Spinderella and The wrong kind of bark.

These sound brilliant thank you so much. Stig of the Dump - now we're talking. I loved that as a kid. Just been looking at Davd Walliams stuff too - Gangsta Granny looks a hoot!

I have vague memories of Richard Scarry - will investigate....

DS liked Titchy Witch and Winnie Witch books at that age too.

I'm not sure what age they are aimed at but DS1 (5) and I have just discovered Dr Suess.

I'd always heard of him but never read any of his books but they are fab. DS is really loving them. The language and rhyming he uses is fantastic.

How about any of the Jane Hissey's Old bear and friends titles?

Check her profile on goodreads.com she's having a giveway of her new titles still plenty left up for grabs.

Usborne Illustrated Book for Boys, bought for DS to read to him when he was just 5. He loved it. Has got a good range of stories with fab illustrations.

My nearly five year old loves the Mr Gum series ( and so do I!) He's also enjoyed the Jack Stalwart series about a boy spy. You can also get some good versions of King Arthur, Robin Hood, Greek myths etc.

Flat Stanley, Dinkin Dings by Guy Bass or really anything that he does - great books. Maybe Captain Underpants?

Growlithe · 01/09/2012 18:36

Horrid Henry would be good, a proper story but shorter than a novel.

Mr gum.
Stig of the dump
Charlotte's web

Dd1 (6.4) loves Michael morpurgo Reading them I often feel that his stories might appeal more to boys (and my tomboy daughter.) particular favorites have been Butterfly lion, little manfred, Kensukes kingdom and my friend Walter.

BlueChampagne · 04/09/2012 13:55

Another vote for Winnie the Witch, and also Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants.

It was a Dark and Stormy Night by Alan Ahlberg is a mid way book with pics but lots of text as well and a very exciting story.

My son liked the Marcia Williams books at this age - great retellings of Greek Myths and Robin Hood in a comic strip style.
