We've done Roald Dahl and The Enchanted Wood etc....

Also delved into Billy Bonkers which DS quite liked, but I didn't!

Watching with interest, mine is 6 in November. Have you tried Jacqueline Wilson? My DS loves A Dinosaur's Packed Lunch.

miomio · 23/08/2012 22:22

I had a chat about this exact thing in watetstones - this age bracket is tricky - you want exciting stories but nothing scary or dark. We too have done magic faraway and dahl. We have tried Eva Ibottson and the Lemony Snickets books have been recomended.

nipitinthebud · 23/08/2012 22:22

Astrosaurs, Slime Squad, Famous Five?

hermioneweasley · 23/08/2012 22:23

DS is enjoying the chronicles of narnia. He also enjoyed the first Harry Potter, but I think he struggled to keep up with the plot.

He likes the naughty little sister books.

We tried phantom tollbooth, but that was too advanced.

moonblushtomato · 23/08/2012 22:27

I didn't realise Jacqueline Wilson wrote any books for boys! Will look into that.

Also, think DS might enjoy My Naughtly Little Sister....possibly because he has one!!

Some great recommendations here, keep them coming!

We went from Faraway Tree to famous Five, then when we were fully blyton'd out, Mr Gum was a refreshing change and a hoot.

Lissy31 · 23/08/2012 22:31

Try the Flat Stanley books, mr majeka books, Sam pig stories. Something by Dick King Smith.

iseenodust · 24/08/2012 10:45

The marble crusher - Morpurgo short stories
Has he discovered Donsaur Cove series yet?
Dirty Bertie
Back on Blyton - The Brer Rabbit book - lots of self-contained short stories

MirandaWest · 24/08/2012 10:47

DS loved the Sophie books by Dick King Smith at that age

coffeeandwine · 24/08/2012 10:49

The how to train a dragon series by Cressida are great. Some good artwork for him to look at as well.

coffeeandwine · 24/08/2012 10:50

Don't know where her last name went! Cressida COWELL.

porridgelover · 24/08/2012 10:52

We are finishing Enchanted Wood, but have also loved Narnia (especially) as watched films too. Also loved The Railway Children. Famous Five was a bit meh. Poppy Longstocking much enjoyed.
We are listening to Artemis Fowl in the car which is older but seems to be going down well (peerhaps because Adrian Dunbar has a dreamy voice..?!.....)

Morebiscuitsplease · 24/08/2012 16:13

Horrid Henry series by Francesca Simon. Captain underpants by Dave Pilkey. The beast quest series are very popular. Also try Harry Potter in audio, my daughter listened to them before reading courtesy of our local library, your, any need to order them.

elliejjtiny · 24/08/2012 16:22

DS1 was 6 in July. Recently we have been reading harry potter, roald dahl, famous five (although he wasn't keen on that),

moonblushtomato · 24/08/2012 20:40

Yes we have dabbled in the Secret Seven, it was okaaaaay....

Like the sound of FLat Stanley and Dinosaur Cove.

Have banned Horrid Henry of the TV show variety in our house, are the books just as, er, horrid?

Captain Underpants, The Iron Man (Ted Huges)- bizarrely 3 year old DD liked this more than DS, Mr Majeika, Roald Dahl- Just been listening to Esio Trot on audio CD and had us all in stitches- I didn't know that one before. Oh yes, and Jeremy Strong!- he has had a hold on DS for a while now, although I have gone off! Viking in my Bed is great, then the others I wasn't so keen on but DS liked The Hundred Mile Dog and My Brother's famous bottom- there are loads.

FallenCaryatid · 25/08/2012 21:06

Mine liked the Moomin books by Tove Jansson.

Leeds2 · 25/08/2012 23:38

Iggy and Me series, by Jenny (?) Valentine - a modern day version of My Naughty Little Sister!

Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald.

Just William. There are some "abridged" versions around, if the originals are too old, but I can't remember who wrote then.

Astrosaurs/Cows In Action series by Steve Cole.

I love the Horrid Henry books, never seen the TV show.

moonblushtomato · 26/08/2012 18:46

Tried Jeremy Strong, have got the picture books of Moomins (DCs love them)

The Iron Man sounds good, older DS loved it at junior school, this DC is a bit more adventurous at age nearly 6 so might give that a go!!

The Kitty books by Bel Mooney are fun.

Whatevertheweather · 28/08/2012 21:05

I'm reading Michael Morpugo to 5yo dd - currently reading Best Mate about a greyhound dog. She loves it. She also enjoys the Tumtum and Nutmeg books.

NorthernGobshite · 28/08/2012 21:14

The Humphrey hamster ones are good.
