Need some help book-buying - The Velveteen Rabbit?

I want to buy a classic childrens book for a friends young dc. I'm thinking about The Velveteen Rabbit?
As illustrations go, does anyone have any advice as to the best edition I should look for? (is it just me or do the older editions not seem to have suitable illustrations for younger children?) I've googled and come across some creepy images as well Confused
It doesn't matter if the book is new or secondhand. I'm just stumped as to which one to order.
I've scoured a few bookshops and did think to pop into my local library for some advice but it's currently closed/undergoing a revamp.
Any guidance from MN booklovers here would be much appreciated!

We've got the one with the original illustrations by William Nicholson (and CD) and my DD has never found it creepy. She is now 5 and has enjoyed it for 3/ 4 years.

We'd got it from the library in a newer abridged edition first and I didn't like the pictures as much. Personally I find twee illustrations a big put off in children's books.

An abridged version is possibly more appropriate for a younger child, but the original is more likely to be treasured for longer, as they will understand more of the "philosophy" behind the story as they age and can understand more.

Whichever option you choose, "The Velveteen Rabbit" sounds like a lovely and thoughtful present.

Thank you for your advice. I ordered a copy with the original illustrations and it was delivered todaySmile
I had meant to say in my post that it's the newer illustrated versions that creep me out the most - the 2007 (Don Daily) and 2009 (Ottolenghi) but I thought the older versions might be too old for an infant. I was wrong.
Really pleased with my William-Nicholson purchase. Both friend & baby will love it.

When I was little I got a copy of this book but they changed the little girls name to mine and made it completely personalised.... I can't help but remember crying for ages that I left my darling bunny out in the garden.
