Would like to buy a book for my 7 year old niece. She loves books and is quite an advanced reader. She has read all the Roald Dahl Books and is working her way through The Babysitters Club at the moment.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks.

Calvin & Hobbes anthology. (Yes I'm being serious).

Calvin and Hobbes seconded here as our 7 year old really gets it.

The How to Train Your Dragon series has also been a hit and is suitable for boys and girls as both feature as heroes. Lots of yucky stuff to keep them amused and some good moral issues resolved without preaching. I have read them and thought they were good too.

My 8yo has just discovered the Chalet School. Best thing is there's about 60 of them Grin

My 8 year old loves the 'Jill' series by Ruby Ferguson. Especially good for girls who like horses.

Helen Cresswell is a great childrens author too. I especially enjoyed her 'Bagthorpes' series as a child.

We have just started How to train your Dragon with my 7 year old ds, after he worked his way through the whole Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I had never thought of Calvin & Hobbes, but that is a great idea.

He is also reading the Big Nate series, which he loves.

How about the classics like 'Anne of Green Gables', 'Tom's midnight Garden' and 'A Little Princess'?

What about Ballet Shoes? I loved it at that age.

I wouldn't give AOGG to a seven year old. It is best appreciated at an older age - 10-14 ideally.

My just turned 7yo DD has recently loved:

Charlotte's Web
Utterly Me Clarice Bean etc by Lauren Child - she can't read these aloud to me without collapsing into giggles
Ottoline books by Chris Riddell
Iggy and Me books by Jenny Valentine

also the Anna Hibiscus series by Atinuke and the Lulu series by Hilary McKay which are both available as sets from the Book People at the mo. And I've got my eye on the Madame Pamplemousse books and Amazing Esme.

Babysitters Club, how fun! How do you get your hands on them, though? I have about 60 or 70 I think, but I hardly ever see them in charity shops now.

Would Sweet Valley Twins be okay? There's some talk of boyfriends etc, but it's mostly about school, hobbies, competition.
