encouraging 10 yr old girl to read

Hi! I would like to help my daughter to get a love of reading, and to encourage her to WANT to read every day.

I was/am an avid reader, and I get great pleasure from going into other worlds and adventures etc through my books.

My DD is a bright girl, and does read bits and pieces but never finishes a book, and never gets hooked by a book to want to pick it up to read more.

We read together every night. We've done Enid Blyton, Roman Mysteries through the series. She read Captain Underpants, Diary ofvWimpybkid series 2 years ago.

She never liked the Fairy books nor Jaqueline Wilson books.

I made the small mistake of reading Diary of Adrian Mole... To her. I had to edit bits as I read to her. Now she wants The Capuccino Years. I have explained its going to be too old for her but she keeps on about it! I have said I will read it and then make a final decision.

She wants to read a grown up mystery or romance mystery!

I have tried to start her on Agatha Christie and she's read the first section of And Then There Were None, but again isn't finishing it.

So now she wants a grown up mystery romance, stress on the romance! I tried Little Women, but am now at a loss as to what to suggest. Soooo....can anyone help???

Thanks!

I have read a lot of classic books with my dc, things like "Stig of the Dump", "Carrie's war", "Charlotte sometimes", "tom's midnight garden"
My dd also likes Michael Morpurgo, Harry Potter. At the moment, she is really into Doctor who so is reading a lot of novels based on the series.

Warning - I haven't read them so you'd need to check for suitability - but, what about the Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging type books? Might the slight 'naughtiness' of them (which from what I've read on here is pretty minimal) make them seem appealing?

I loved Georgette Hayer and Daphne Du Maurier at her age, but not sure she would enjoy them!

She might like Beswitched, by Kate Saunders. The age recommendation on the back is 9+, although there is one (wholly unnecessary, imo) use of the f* word which some parents don't like. The earlier Princess Diary books would fulfill the romance requirement, and would probably be suitable, but would probably lead to requests to read the later books which are, imo, too old.

Some of the Jean Ure books would be OK, but you would need to check them first. Same with Cathy Cassidy.

How about the lovely historical romance books by Georgette Hayer. 'Friday's Child' is funny, gripping and about a younger teenage girl.

Another vote for Meg Cabot & the older Jaqueline Wilson books, like Girls In Love/Aloud/Kiss. Karen McCombie books, too. Oh, and The Dork Diaries! DD just read & loved Hmm "L is for Loser" which is like the worst American sitcom, but heyho, she lapped it up. Apparently it's part of a series , as is Bollywood Babes (much less horrible).

Tom Gate Brilliant adventures (or something like that, by Lin something, DC are devouring).

Thank goodness DD is NOT into romance, but she loves any story with a sordid twist.

Oh, and Darren Shan, if you can stomach the grisly horror of his books.

I used to love nancy drew when I was about that age. I'm reading the hunger games at the moment I'm on the second loved the first. My dd is 10 and a bit squeamish so I don't think I'll let her read them yet.

Eva Ibbotsen wrote some lovely 'older girl' romances - The Star of Kazan and The Secret Countess are two that she might like.
