How old for Alex rider and Percy Jackson?

Ds1 is seven and a very strong reader. DH still reads to him every night. We've just come
To the end of Harry potter number four and have said that's it for a bit (because they get a bit dark) and he has also loved Michael morpurgo and we are starting the hobbit. Would Alex rider be ok or are they a bit old? Similarly percy Jackson sounds right up his street would these be ok for a seven year old?

DS had Alex Rider series for xmas at 9y3m.
Not read Percy Jackson but also had the dvd for xmas.

Just asked him, he says they aren't really very scary - well except when people get blown up.

ds 8, has read all Percy Jackson and the follow-on series - Rick Riordan his current favorite author. definitely give it a go!

Alex rider is fine for this age, but if reading it to them you might want to prepare yourself for giving a crash course in why drugs are wrong (its at the beginning of one of them and Alex goes after a guy who has been selling drugs to his friends). Scorpio has one of the most gripping starts of any book.

DD read and adored Percy Jackson when she was late seven just before eight.

They definitely sound like they will appeal to DS1. Think I need to pop over to amazon!

Ds1 read them at 9.

He read the Percy Jackson books first at 9 and a bit and the Alex Rider set we got from the Book People dirt cheap and he ploughed through those at 9 and a half.

Do look at the book people, I can't remember what the set cost but they were ever so cheap. Ds1 also read the Michelle Paver series I got from the same site. He really enjoyed those too.

2nd Book People - if you aren't getting from the library.

DS has just had a few comic book Alex Riders (they are ones he has already read and he says most of the story is there, but given the length they must be quite truncated) from the library, and loved them. He has also read some comic book classics.
Worth a look, he zips through them but probably reads 3 or 4 times before we taken them back.

The first 6 Alex Rider books from about 8 or 9: the later two are more disturbing. Percy Jackson again from about 8 - lovely books. You'll enjoy both series too!

Takver · 19/07/2012 19:45

Another one your ds might like is the Charlie Bone series - its a bit like HP (magic, adventure, boarding school etc) but less dark than the later HPs.

The content of Alex Rider is classed as 11+. Would say ok for 9/10 year olds but would think slightly too old for a 7 year old. Also, Alex Rider is an ideal read for boys to have a go at reading themselves rather than as a read aloud book. It may be worth waiting until he's ready to read them himself.

Would recommend the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage, also the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan.

Both more age appropriate than Alex Rider.

amck5700 · 20/07/2012 22:17

I'd think maybe the Charlie Bone books or the How to train your dragon books might be a bit more appropriate - my boys are very good readers but didn't do alex rider until they were about 9/10 and they didn't like percy jackson tho i know a lot of kids love them.

seeker · 20/07/2012 22:19

Percy Jackson fine. Alex Ryder, not fine.

LadyofWinterfell · 20/07/2012 22:29

DD1 started reading Percy Jackson about 6 months ago at 8.1 and she loves them. She also really likes the Skulduggery Pleasant books which your DS might prefer?

Maybe Truckers/Diggers/Wings Terry Pratchett, or Johnny and the Dead/The Bomb/Only you can save Mankind - same author.

Virgil · 21/07/2012 19:33

I think we'll hold off on jack for a little while and give Percy a go initially. He still likes jack stalwart and so we might as well let him enjoy those for a bit longer before moving up a level with the spy kid stuff.

I agree with Takver go for Charlie Bone... good books for early readers, not as hefty as HP but just as engaging.
