Hi all. DD is 14 and loves to read but we have hit a bit of a wall in finding books she will enjoy. She is not interested in the vampire/ dystopian future/paranormal stuff anymore. The young adult sections in the bookshops are full of these.

She has read a few adult books including Catcher in the Rye and The Help.
She also enjoyed Siobhan Dowd's books A Swift Pure Cry and Bog Child. She has just finished I Capture the Castle which she loved.

We would appreciate any suggestions.
ThanksSmile

If she likes historical fiction, I was reading Robert Graves and Mary Renault about her age.

Has she tries the Michael Grant books?

Gone, Hunger, Lies and Plague.

Pratchett - avoid The Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic - TCOM is the first Discworld book, but is a piss-take of lots of other fantasy novels, which is wasted if you haven't read say Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight (don't bother...)

He might most enjoy Johnny and the Bomb and the other two Johnny books (aimed at around 11yo), then there's Truckers-Diggers-Wings and The Carpet People which are suitable for younger kids but still enjoyed by adults. The Discworld series gets good with Equal Rites (especially good for girls), Mort (esp for anyone a bit morbid), and Pyramids (lots of maths and ancient Greece jokes). Then there's a few less good ones after Lords and Ladies, but the satire really picks up after Guards! Guards! and they all improve after that, but possibly you have to be adult to get more of the references.

Pullman - Ruby in the Smoke is good. Northern Lights trilogy is the famous one - the first two are good and the third rather loses its way in a big god analogy IMO, but all worth reading.

White Cat - Red Glove - Black Heart, by Holly Black. Just excellent reads.
Harry Potter meets the Godfather. With romance & slight nookie, too :).
