If your dc enjoyed the Harry Potter books, what else do they enjoy reading?

Dd1 (8) has been reading Harry Potter but has almost read all the books (and watched the films), she's now reading the Hobbit but isn't really enjoying it as much as HP.

If your dc's have read HP, what else have they enjoyed reading?

Percy Jackson series, by Rick Riordan.

Or the Djinn series, by Linda Davies.

Marne · 16/07/2012 21:37

Thank you Leeds2, i will take a look at those, dd1 gets through so many books, i must start e-baying her beast quest collection. School keep trying to give her girly books which she hates.

Terry Pratchett's children's books, obviously!

But also 'classics' - Swallows and Amazons for instance.

Takver · 16/07/2012 22:34

Charlie Bone series (by Jenny Nimmo)
Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones (start with Charmed Life)
Lionboy trilogy (Zizou Corder)
Molly Moon series (can't remember author)

loads of others, but I think those would appeal if she likes HP.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 16/07/2012 22:36

Dark Materials trilogy

JarethTheGoblinKing · 16/07/2012 22:40

Agree with Swallows and Amazons.

Would she read Mallory Towers? Grin (the proper ones, not the new shite)

Marne · 17/07/2012 11:49

Thank you for all the ideas 'percy jackson' looks like the sort of thing she would read, i will look at the other sugestions too. School have given her 'watership down' to read but i can't see her enjoying it (its not really her thing).

I wouldn't push Watership Down on an 8yr old - its not nice fluffy bunnies, quite grim really.

FoofyShmooffer · 17/07/2012 12:55

Skullduggary Pleasant. There are 6 books in the series so far. A more sophisticated style of writing, brilliant humour. Gripping and really fun.

GrimmaTheNome · 17/07/2012 13:49

I seem to remember DD loving Lemony Snicket at about this age

LettyAshton · 17/07/2012 13:56

Dd has just discovered the Warrior Cats series of books and she is romping through them. She too has read the Harry Potter books (but her enjoyment tailed off when they became less "schoolsy" and more dark).

The Warrior Cats books are fantasy (duh! well, of course they are!) and fit your criteria in that they are not too girly - plus they have some decent action and gore.

JennerOSity · 17/07/2012 13:58

Black Beauty? Ditto the Dark Materials trilogy idea.

Marne · 17/07/2012 14:06

Grimma- thats what i thought about watership down, although dd1 has no empithy (due to having Aspergers) so rarely gets upset about death or sad stories (she has asked to watch and read 'boy in the stripe pyjamas' but i have put my foot down until she is older).

We have tried Lemony Snicket but she wasn't interested, she loves fantasy, dragons, beasts and magic Smile.

Please please read Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, or the Magyck series by Angie Sage. The Bartimeaus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud is brilliant.
How old is she? Would she prefer something older?

Stonefield · 17/07/2012 14:11

Sorry just reread OP, so she's 8. Definitely try Inkheart.

DontEatTheVolesKids · 17/07/2012 14:14

Jane Blonde, Jacqueline Wilson.

Marne · 17/07/2012 14:14

She's 8 but her reading is at 12 year old level (and her understanding) so she likes to read older childrens books but also likes the beast quest series (which are probably for younger children), due sto her Aspergers she is very intelligent but imature (if you know what i mean).

LettyAshton · 17/07/2012 14:45

dd enjoyed the Inkheart series too. Dd is 8 and reads very well so if I think about what she has enjoyed then lately it would be Warrior Cats, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights (shortened versions!) and, if you're looking at fantasy, some graphic novels and comics (passed down from Supergeek ds).

I know what you mean about lack of empathy: ds seems completely immune to tear-jerking moments.

GrimmaTheNome · 17/07/2012 16:33

Marne - ITA about The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. (IMO its not a good book, probably pointless if you don't have empathy and rather horrible if you do, and def for more mature readers).

Classic 'beast and magic' Five children and It and the Phoenix and the Carpet, just to broaden the mix.

Marne · 17/07/2012 19:42

Thank you, lots of great ideas (will be looking at all of them on amazon).

Gimma- i couldn't even watch all of 'the boy in the striped pyjamas' but i probably have to much empathy, i'm not sure how dd would find it, she probably wouldn't be upset by it at all. Dd1s best friend left school today (moved away) and she wasn't bothered at all Smile, death does not bother her at all.
