when he could be playing on the wii ?

ha ha no.. this jsut seems the most well read part of the forum so i anticipate getting the most feedback.

What books would you recommend for a boy of 10 going on 11 to take for holiday reading.
He has read all the harry potter , percy jacksons is currently reading war horse..

he reads everyday and seems to like long involved stories. to help you gauge his level, he tried the lord of the rings but lost interest ...

cheers

The Indian in the Cupboard books by Lynne Reid Banks.

toomuch2young · 14/07/2012 13:25

Malorie Blackman has some great books, very issue led and gripping.
Pig heart boy would be age appropriate, then the noughts and crosses series for teens.

His Dark Materials definitely fine for a 10 yo. I'm reading it with my 9 yo and we share the reading.

I probably won't get past Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife for now though - this The Amber Spyglass has too much that wouldn't be understood so better to leave for a couple of years.

Hownoobrooncoo · 14/07/2012 13:37

My son read the The Subtle Knife and Hunger Games at 9 yrs. I did wonder if they would be too old and complex with some dark themes but he has a voracious appetite and I know at that age some of the themes/story will go over his head. He goes back and reads his books again and again so will read something new or different into it each time as he gets older.

Robin Jarvis books - the Deptford Mice series to start, moving on to the The Alchymist's Cat trilogy. Gruesome in parts, but riveting.

bumbleymummy · 14/07/2012 13:44

Hmm, based on some of these suggestions he may find the Indian in the Cupboard a but too simple. I think they are great stories though.

I'm a bit Shock at The Hunger Games for a 10 year old. I read the synopsis and thought it sounded a bit too disturbing for me never mind a child!

nickelbarapasaurus · 14/07/2012 13:48

if you want historical grimness, what about The Riddle of the Poisoned Monk by Sarah Matthias, or Rosalind Kerwen's Grim Gruesome (it's about a viking)

Something like Roll of thunder hear my cry?
Philip Reeve, alan gibbons

Hello

As the OP has fully admitted to this being a non-AIBU AIBU, we've moved it to Children's Books

you're just mean.
:P

nickelbarapasaurus · 14/07/2012 14:23

you could have left the title as an AIBU though! Shock

Seconding: Artemis Fowl, Mister Monday and The Hobbit as well as anything by Diana Wynne Jones.

Also:
Children of the Lamp 1: The Akehenaten Adventure (Magical Fantasy of a djinn flavour)
Midnight for Charlie Bone (Magical Fantasy, children with powers attend a school...)
The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents - Terry Pratchett (and some of his other stuff for younger readers)
Wolf Brother (Pre-history adventure)

If these are a bit young for him there's The Amulet of Samarkand, Stoneheart and Inkheart too. Most of these books I've mentioned are the beginning of a series so there's lots of reading to be done if he likes them and they are mainly fantasy type books.

I wouldn't go for the Hunger Games yet... its pretty violent with romance themes, distopian etc. I'd think of it more as a teen book, but your call obviously.

I have a 12 year old and an almost 11 year old both boys, both who like to read. neither of them are interested in the classics - though we have tried.

At your sons age, i would second (or third or whatever) Skulduggery pleasant, Artemis Fowl, Anything by Anthony Horowitz - he did some funny books too. Diary of a wimpy kid, the cherub books, Charlie Bone maybe, The tunnels series, has he done the whole How to be a pirate - cressida Cowell stuff - maybe those are younger. and anything, anything that Darren Shan writes goes down a storm as long as he isn't sensitive to gore!! i am sure there are loads more - i'll have to go and examine the bookcases!!
