'Super Submarines' by Tony Mitton is a big hit with my 3yo dts. He also does 'Dazzling Diggers' in the same series which we've borrowed & they love!
I really like Richard Scarry books, they're not v.well known but fab illustrations and so much to look at.
Funny Bones is a classic if they don't already have, don't know a child who doesn't like it!

mogandme · 07/07/2012 20:47

When DC was 3 he loved; Dirty Bertie, Pants, The mole who knew

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 07/07/2012 20:48

Here Comes the Poo Bus

My 3yo loves it

ohmeohmy · 07/07/2012 20:50

Don't let the pigeon drive the bus Mo Willems or any of the other pigeon books

Cheriefroufrou · 07/07/2012 20:51

underpants thunderpants

oddslippers · 07/07/2012 20:56

You choose by pippa goodhart it will be chosen again and again and again! Also mixed up fairytales is great. I think that you don't really need to choose a book with diggers in but of you do lift the flap usbourne books always go down well

MrsJamin · 07/07/2012 20:59

Anything by Oliver Jeffers, (apart from The Heart And The Bottle). Where the wild things are. Or Julia Donaldson. In my experience you can start to move 3 yr old boys on from the more obvious digger stories.

Mollydoggerson · 07/07/2012 21:01

Dinosaurs love Underpants.
Aliens love underpands.
The gruffalo.

3duracellbunnies · 07/07/2012 21:04

I second You Choose, still a firm favourite with 2+5yr old, and secretly with 7yr old too! We had to buy a second copy as ours was so loved!

I really want to eat a child is DS' fave at the mo. Achilles the crocodile doesn't want to eat his bananas....

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 08/07/2012 00:12

Where the Wild Things Are and/or In the Night Kitchen Grin timeless classics.

neolara · 08/07/2012 00:27

Any Harry and the Dinosaurs book. Totally agree about You Choose and Dirty Bertie.

whosphuckoffy · 08/07/2012 00:36

My ds had a fireman Sam book bought for him when he was 3, he's 6 now and still loves it. It's a big board type, with a fold out pontypandy map in the back with a groove cut out, you wind up Jupiter (the fire engine) and it goes round the track.

Naughty Bus

sagenod · 08/07/2012 01:59

'Calm down, Boris' is a fun book with an orange hairy puppet who likes to tickle and give kisses-my DSs love it.
The Gruffalo is great, but also 'Tiddler' and the 'Snail and the Whale' by Julia Donaldson-they are fantastic to read aloud.
Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is an essential classic imo.

piprabbit · 08/07/2012 02:16

Another vote for You Choose.
My 8yo DD has loved it since toddlerhood. My 4yo DS loves it too.
I have a cunning plan though - DD and DS now read it together which I rest my eyes!

May09Bump · 08/07/2012 02:17

Snail and the Whale - has been going strong for the last 3yrs
Cave baby
Rainbow Rob - has been going strong for the last 3yrs
Gruffalo / Gruffalo child
Imaginary garden (a usa one - maybe available on amazon)
smartest giant in town
charlie cooks book

Probably go with rainbow rob - about a penguin, colours, other animals he meet and a nice not puchy moral of "it's good to be yourself"

Hope this helps - I love buying books as presents!

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 08/07/2012 02:19

I third 'You Choose'. I've read it to the DC's approximately 174,000,000 times.

TheSurgeonsMate · 10/07/2012 10:16

We have one of the 1001 Things to Spot series, which dd really likes. I've just found that there's an omnibus of four different ones all bound into one book - and thought what a great gift that would make.
