I'm a primary teacher and have used the Atticus the Storyteller anthology with my classes - it contains 100 of the most popular Greek myths broken down into bite-size chunks of a few pages each. Went down well with children from Year 1 to Year 5. Should be available on Amazon.

alana39 · 29/06/2012 18:58

If you look on Amazon there will be several although it's more of a challenge to find well written ones.

Usborne do some - I find some of them a bit irritating but DS2 is into this and loves the ones he has been given.

Definitely Atticus the Storyteller, its excellent.

TheOnlyWayIsEnfield · 30/06/2012 08:17

When I was a kid I had "Odysseus, The Greatest Hero of them All" by Tony Robinson and Richard Curtis. It was ace. I don't know if that is still available?

How young? Roger Lancelyn Green was the doyen in my school days.

wearymum200 · 10/07/2012 21:46

Roger lancelyn green prob aimed at good readers 8 plus.
Lucy coates has written a whole lot of retellings (it is possibly these which are anthologised in Atticus, but I am not sure). Marcia Williams has done lovely illustrated versions, they were on special offer on the book people. Ds1 also likes the Kingfisher iliad and enjoyed the rosemary sutcliff illustrated "black ships before troy"

Another vote for Percy Jackson. My DS1 (8) and DS2 (6) are obsessed with mythology following the first 2 books being read at bedtime.

TouTou · 10/07/2012 21:53

YY Usborne. This one is the best thing I've ever read with my DD (age 6) and DS loves it too (although is a little afraid of the underworld picture. It's so gorgeous looking and the cover is a bit furry.

PS, it is a bit expensive, but it's a really lovely book.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 10/07/2012 21:55

Yes to Atticus. It's by Lucy Coates I think.

PommePomme · 10/07/2012 21:58

D'Aulaire's book of Greek myths. They also do a Norse version.

I would recommend this one (which we have at home), because it's written by the great Geraldine McCaughrean.

I would also recommend for the Tony Robinson "Odysseus the Greatest Hero of Them All" and its sequel "Odysseus the Journey Through Hell" - which are the most readily accessible versions of the Iliad and Odyseey. For older children, Rosemary Sutcliff's "Black Ships Before Troy" and "The Wanderings of Odysseus" are superb, and superbly illustrated by Alan Lee.

I picked up a CD of Atticus the Storyteller in our local bookstore just last weekend. Great for the school run as the stories are so short. I keep telling DS I might turn him into stew if he doesn't behave Grin.
