My DD finds it hard to settle down at night and a bed time story helps so would love some suggestions for any that have worked for anyone else.

Any of the slinky Malinki / hairy mclary / type books were popular with DS at this age, I think it's just the lovely rhythms of the poems that are soothing to little ears. Plus coincided with him going thru the "look doggie / kitty" animal obsessed stage nicely too.

I don't want to go to bed, with the little tigger.

tribpot · 06/06/2012 23:02

The Smartest Giant in Town, Winnie the Pooh and the 10 Busy Bees, Guess How Much I Love You.

Peepo by the Alhbergs .

DS1 is nearly 20 but I think it would still send him to sleep.I i would need to stay up till four till he returns from a night d j ing though!

lilbreeze · 06/06/2012 23:07

I agree with Peepo. Lovely story and illustrations and ends with the baby in the story fast asleep in his cot. One of the few that I never tire of.

Goodnight moon

The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Not about going to bed, but DS loved it at 2.

I don't want to go to.bed, in The Little Princess series

whenskiesaregrey · 06/06/2012 23:16

'I love you little monster' is lovely, just lovely. It is about a parent talking to a child, who they think is asleep, and telling them how much they love them. It really is such a lovely book.

severnofnine · 06/06/2012 23:16

owl babies is a favourite here.

janji · 06/06/2012 23:18

The 'Can't you sleep little bear?' series of books! Love them still as a so called grown up!

Say good night to the animals, by Ian Whybrow?
I like it amyway. Will check out some of the other ideas on the thread, thanks!

Our DCs have both had several books at bedtime but always finished with the same one so they know its time for lights out and sleep. For DD we used The Big Night Night Book and for DS we used I'll see you in the morning - the british one, not the american one which has been massacred imho to remove any mention of not being afraid...

DD is coming up 3 and if she wakes in the night she still likes to hear 'her' night night story before going back to sleep.

Other popular books that haven't been mentioned above include One snowy day, Along came a bed time, Say good night to the animals, and Snuggle up sleepy ones.

duchesse · 06/06/2012 23:46

DD3 always goes to sleep when I tell her The Gruffalo. It's quite repetitive, which helps I think.

Springforward · 06/06/2012 23:49

We get on well with anything by Julia Donaldson, but at the mo DS loves Up and Down plus Lost and Found - can't think of author's name, annoyingly....

Bossybritches22 · 06/06/2012 23:49

Each Peach Pear Plum by the Albergs.

Favourite of my two when small & now at 15 & 17 they still recite it all for little visitors!

littleweed10 · 06/06/2012 23:49

Topsy and tim books
Snail and the whale
Agree peepo baby is delightful
The very hungry caterpillar
Spot the dog short stories...

strawberrypenguin · 06/06/2012 23:49

The little white owl. I can't remember who it's by I'm afraid and it's in DSs room so I can't check but he loves it and the white owl snuggles of on favourite branch and goes to sleep at the end of the book.

stressheaderic · 06/06/2012 23:53

Snail and the whale here too. And Rosie's Hat, which inexplicably makes me well up every time.
No Bed without Ted is nice.

littleweed10 · 06/06/2012 23:58

Owl babies is lovely

iseenodust · 07/06/2012 12:12
