Which fiction books could I get for DS - 6yo - year 1 - ORT level 8 (purple)?

I wanted to get him some books. I got some Beast Quest books but they are too hard for him to read on his own. I would be grateful for any recommendations.

TIA!

Does he like Horrid Henry? The Easy Readers are fairly manageable. Apart from that I've just ordered DS (similar level) lots of books from Amazon, but I hestitate to recommend as not sure how he will get on Grin. My plan is to read them with/to him if they're too hard, or put them away for 6 months if necessary. Will watch this post and let you know!

There is a series called Corgi Pups that do easy readers, then DS has enjoyed some of the Blue and now Red Bananas series, including Michael Morpurgo -you can browse some of his stuff for early readers on Amazon and "look inside" to get an idea of difficulty.

Thanks, yes, he does like HH do will give the easy readers a go and good idea to look inside. It'll stop me getting stuff that's too hard and then having to read it myself!

Look on amazon for magic treehouse, my boys read those, the new adventures of the wishing chair, captain underpants and other moon before they were ready for beast quest which I think are more ORT level 10.

Oh and dinosaur cove.

Hi again!
Just back from our local library- they have lots of books now for this stage, or just above, so do go and browse yours for your DS. Importantly (for us) they have "colour puffins" as well as the bananas series- just got quite a few blue bananas that he can read fairly easily, the red are a bit harder, and quite a few other early reading stuff that is also still colour. DS is still rather wedded to colour pictures so am hoping they will go down well with him. Am pleased I have found this section of the library as it will lower my bill on Amazon!

Ok, I'm back. Rather than start a new thread I thought I would add to this one. I am now becoming rather more knowlegeable in regard to reading material for this level, that is 5-7 year olds who aren't free readers yet and can't manage the stuff aimed at 7+ but want to branch out from our friends Biff, Chip and Kipper (or their parents do!)

So, here are a few series I have found-
Blue Bananas- good stories and fairly easy generally (watch out for Mr Crookodile which is a great story and fantastically illustrated but has about 15-20 much more difficult words in!). Big Dog and Little Dog stories are good fun, lots of others to enjoy.
Red Bananas- these are a bit harder, your child requires a bit more stamina (or read over several nights etc) and help on the odd word but still manageable at this level. Some of them we have got out and read to DS if they've seemed too tricky just yet.
Sprinters- some really good stories here by the likes of Dick King Smith and Michael Morpurgo- DS hasn't actually read yet so not road tested yet, but look like the perfect level
Corgi Pups- try "Dog on a Witch's Broomstick". About the same level as Blue Bananas- very readable/easy at this level, but short chapter books, you can do a chapter a night. After Pups come Young Corgis, which look like a natural progression.
Colour puffins- The Witch's Dog (rather similar to Dog on a Witch's Broomstick re story!), again, easy level- there are lots in this series.
Happy Families series- fantastic books
Horrid Henry- Easy Readers- couldn't leave these off!
Please feel free to add!

That's a great list, could anyone add stuff for girls as well please ?

Dd2 is moreorless at this stage & our library doesn't have much in.

Has anyone mentioned animal crackers?

I bought a pack from the bookpeople, but I know we have them at our local library. The stories are funny, but relatively easy to read. My 8 year old still likes to read them.

There's another thread on Primary Education with lots of suggestions- here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/primary/1493778-Please-suggest-some-good-books-for-a-5-year-old

My 6 year old Ds is a very reluctant reader, but he picked Dr Suess' Green Eggs and Ham to read and read it straight through himself. He still reads it all the time, and its really funny. The other books he's willing to read are the DK Early readers, like Star Wars. We have the level 1 books at the moment and they are great.
