Has anyone got any suggestions for funny/silly books that I could read to my dd, she's nearly five.

Mostly she still wants to be read picture books with her younger brother which is fine but I am trying to get her interested in story books as well. She really enjoys the Dr Suess books and liked Fantastic Mr Fox and we've got the Giraffe, the Pelly and Me to read. We've tried the Magic Faraway Tree and Princess Mirrabelle by Julia Donaldson but didn't get into them and we had to stop reading them.

She seems to like funny/silly stories so thought I would try some but have no idea about suggestions other than Roald Dahl. We got George's Marvellous Medicine from the library but as it's quite long she was a bit daunted and wasn't keen.

Thanks.

No idea what they're like, but I got the impression that David Williams' children's books were similar to Roald Dahl so might be worth checking out. I only have younger children so can't be more helpful I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reply, will have a look at those.

The Twits is the best Roald Dalh book for that age group - it's not as long or complicated as George's marverlous medicine, and very dark and funny!

Also the Enourmous Crocodile.

Try the 'Daisy' books by Kes Gray. If I were you, I would start off with the picture books and then, if she likes them, there are also chapter books which would get her interested in reading longer stories.

IMO, David Walliams is a bit old in content for a 4 year old. You could try Mr Gum however by Andy Stanton - can't get much sillier than that!

Winnie the Witch?

iseenodust · 25/05/2012 18:16

Russell the sheep series
The easy Paddington ones
The Happy Family series by Ahlberg (check on Amazon some funnier than others).

My ds adores the Astrosaurs books (he's 6). Not too long, very funny/silly - and dinosaurs in space! What's not to like.

Tikkabillajive · 25/05/2012 18:24

The Claude books by Alex T. Smith are very funny and loved by both my 6 year old and 4 yr old. It's not very text heavy and there are illustrations on every page, so it is a good 'next step' from picture books.

Also the Mr Gum series - some of the jokes go sailing over both their heads but it is very surreal and silly, and there have been times when I've had to put the book down because all 3 of us are laughing so much.

My 5yo likes books with a surprise or funny twist. At the moment she really likes (still picture books as 3yo sibling too) The Odd Egg, Click Clack Moo, Here comes the Poo Bus, I'm not Cute. Click Clack Moo is one of my favourites, I get the giggles before the punchline Blush

Reading Josh Lacey's "The Dragonsitter" paragraph about with DS1 4.9

I used to love books of Michael Rosen poems when I was your DD's age, lots of colourful pictures too iirc.

BobbiFleckman · 29/05/2012 16:37

with little sister in tow, we go for Click Clack Moo / Morris the Mankiest Monster and some Winnie the Witch. Flying solo, she really likes Pippi Longstocking (we have the Lauren Child edition), Clarice Bean and the Eloise books.

Jeremy Strong is funny - we especially like the series about Nicolas and his mad family which starts with "My Dad's got an Alligator"

My two also like seriously silly stories (funny takes on fairy tales), illustrated and not too long. I've just read them "Snow White and the seven Aliens"

HTH :)

Not now Bernard. Short but so silly and so funny!

xTonixxx · 29/05/2012 17:33

Not very long books but
"Aliens Love underpants", "Dinosaurs Love underpants" & "Aliens in underpants save the world"

Always get a few giggles :)

It's just got to be 'Who's in the Loo' (is it an elephant having a poo?) - yes it's a picture book but it's brill!

Winnie the Witch was a good transition book for my older DDs to go from the Winnie picture books to the Winnie story books.

Jow about Mog, the Forgetful cat? There's quite a bit of reading in those stories. Watch out for Goodbye Mog though - we don't have that one because DH reckons he's not ready for it yet...

smearedinfood · 31/05/2012 20:05

Second Aliens love Underpants on the same theme the terrible underpants

Snozcumber · 31/05/2012 20:21

We are currently reading Julia Donaldsons 'the giant and the joneses'
All three of mine are hooked!! Dd1 is an old headed 7. Dd2 a young, just turned 6 and ds1 is 3.5 (his first big book) :-)

My dd1 loved tiara club at that age, not quite as rubbish to read aloud as some of the girlie books ;-)

Spookey80 · 31/05/2012 20:37

I have a three year old and we currently love nick sherratts books. They are funny, clever and we are bth enjoying them.
Might be a bit young though.

Oh and there a fab series of books which centre around a puppet (literally) By Sam Lloyd called

"Calm down boris"
"Turn it up Doris"
"Hello Dudley"
"You're not so scary Sid"
"Wendy the widemouthed frog"
"Ernie the Eye Monster"

Really good fun to read :)
