Ideas for books for a 1 year old

I'm currently trying to choose some books to buy for DD's first birthday.

We have a 4 year old too, so we already have lots of popular books ie Julia Donaldson, Tiger who came to tea, Usborne touchy-feely, Shirley Hughes, Hairy Mclary, Spot, Dear zoo, Peepo etc.

I want something nice for DD2 that I might not have thought of. Any little-known or undiscovered gems out there?

My kids love (d) the boris books.

Calm down boris by Sam Lloyd is the first, there's a Christmas boris and boris sister book too. Boris is a hand puppet in all of them so you can read it and get. Boris to do the kissykissy bit with them. They are lovely reading together books Grin

We have a lovely book called 'In my tree' by Sara gillingham and lorena siminovich- features a lovely cloth owl that is like a little puppet sticking through the centre of the book. Apart from that I can only suggest classics which you may have- the meg books, Goodnight Moon, also katie morag although that might be a bit old... Sorry for bad punctuation - on my phone.

Helen Cooper's pumpkin soup books are beautiful and the duck is such a good portrait of a slightly stroppy toddler!

Emily Gravett's 'Again' about a small dragon that wants a story read again and again is great.
You could also try Alison Jay's 'I took the Moon for a Walk' or 'Welcome to the Zoo' (this one is only pictures - you have to make the story up) - the board book editions of these are beautifully done.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have ordered her Calm down Boris, then I looked at In My Tree too and finally chose In My Den by the same author but featuring a bear instead of an owl.

Looking forward to giving them too her :)

Have you got All Afloat on Noah's Boat, by Tony Mitton? Best picture book ever - the rhymes are wonderful. You need to own it.

I thought of your thread just now while reading 'Toddle Waddle' to DD (Julia Donaldson and, I think, Nick Sharatt). She's nearly 3 now and has loved it since she was 1. She used to sign it before she could talk and now loves to 'read' the whole book. Perfect toddler book.

Glad you have found some you like - In My Tree has been brilliant for us as we started off doing the puppet but now DS is older (2.5) he does it himself and does little actions with it to the words! I didn't even know there was a series - might have to check the other ones out too :)

I just remembered some other absolutely brilliant books I would highly recommend from 1+ - they are books about the seasons by Gerda Muller - beautiful pictures and no words, just really lovely detailed scenes of children playing, nature etc. Really good for just chatting about as well as marking the passing of the seasons. Here is the summer one, but there are obviously three more for Autumn, Winter and Spring.

I got "Toddle Waddle" for DDs 1st birthday just gone! (4th May) The toddler's gait is precisely like DD haha!

Aliens love underpants

Other than that we appear to have the same book collection as you OP

This evening we read "Handa's Surprise", by Eileen Browne which I would recommend on the basis of its brevity :>
