Hi there,

I've literally just finished the last of the Hunger Games Trilogy and loved it!

Has anyone got any suggestions of any other series I could read? I'm an adult but love all those I mention in my Subject Title. So anything similar that anyone can suggest?

I may well post in chat aswell as I wasn't sure whether to post in Adult or Children's Books!

Thank you!

The Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness? The Mortal Engines series by Philip Reeve?

Have just had to study both and they are a bit more sci-fi/fantasy than Harry Potter but I actually enjoyed them.

Just briefly read a review on the first Chaos Walking book and it sounds fabulous!

I will order it on my Kindle this afternoon. Thanks Sharpkat.

The Stonewylde series by Kit Berry. Addictive.

Mortal Instruments series, Cassandra Clare. A bit twilightish insomuchas it's not fab writing, but enjoyable none the less and not much to do with vampires (well, not totally about vampires anyway). The Warrior Heir chronicles Cinda Williams Chima. Got one on audio and loved it, so backtracked to find the first in the series. Skulduggery Pleasant books are fab nonsense if you're preferring kids books. If you fancy more adult sci-fi/fantasy type novels, how about Jasper Fforde, beautifully written nonsense; Kelley Armstrong, supernaturals a la Twilight, but much better written in my opinion...though still not great works of literature, just light and readable; Kate Griffin, Matthew Swift novels, a fab urban fantasy series or, lastly, Ben Aaronovitch...very surreal and urban.

Frances Hardinge, Ben Aaronovitch, Jasper Fforde, Diana Wynne Jones, Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, and the Artemis Fowl books.

Jude Magdalen, Mageri, anything by LM Pruitt, Time Riders, Garth Nix, HM Hoover...

I came onto this forum to ask the same question. Sharpkat, are the Chaos Walking books around the same level as the Hunger Games?

"The Noise is a man unfiltered, and without a filter, a man is just chaos walking." Great opening line.

Year 6 son has loved The Hunger Games, he can handle some gore and unhappiness. He is not ready for sex scenes or too much kissing ;)

Sharpkat · 01/06/2012 11:16

I haven't actually read The Hunger Games yet. Had to study the Chaos Walking trilogy for a course. No sex or kissing. It is a war in a new world. It is fast paced and very easy to read. It is described as teen fiction on the back.

Sorry that is not very helpful!

The Northern Lights / Subtle Knife / Amber Spyglass series.

jeee · 01/06/2012 11:20

The Dark is Rising sequence?

DisorderlyNights · 02/06/2012 20:28

It's young adult fiction you seem to be after. You'd enjoy Divergent, and Insurgent by Veronica Roth, and Gemma Malley's novels. Nice mixture of romance, futuristic adventure etc...

mizu · 21/06/2012 19:32

The Noughts and Crosses books?

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 21/06/2012 19:35

I was going to say the Phillip Pullman books they are really good.

EdithWeston · 21/06/2012 19:38

Neil Gaimen - some are teen fiction, others more adult, all great.

Dan (or is it Ben) Aaronovitch - slightly supernatural murder mysteries, set in London.

LaundryFairy · 21/06/2012 19:54

Another vote for Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series - brilliant writing

AphraBehn · 10/07/2012 22:25

Sharpkat I've just done the same course as you Wink. Roll on August 3rd.

showtunesgirl · 10/07/2012 22:34

The Darkangel Trilogy I have no idea why this has never been huge. It's haunted me from my teenage years.

CrazyCatLady78 · 12/07/2012 15:00

I second Diana Wynne Jones and Philip Pullman - also used to love Margaret Mahy books - remember enjoying The Tricksters.

ASillyPhaseIAmGoingThrough · 12/07/2012 15:04

Phillip Pullman recomendation again:

helpmegetmyhusbandsstuffback · 13/07/2012 00:59

Ooh Margaret Mahy! I love The Changeover.

hootiemcboob · 13/07/2012 01:44

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

ALittleScatterOfRain · 13/07/2012 02:09

You might like the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson and The Midnighters Trilogy by Scott Westerfield.

Agree about Garth Nix and Diana Wynne Jones (I've just been re-reading Fire and Brimstone).

I can't remember the author but Tunnels, Deeper, Freefall etc are pretty good.

I enjoyed the Missing Link Trilogy by Kate Thompson, but I can't quite remember what sort of age they're for.

The Jenny Nimmo ones that start with the Snow Spider are good, quick easy reads but I do like them.

There's also I think an Australian one that I'm trying to remember, a bit magical...I'll come back if I do!

BleepingSooty · 13/07/2012 03:43

I've read the same as you. I've also been reading the Game of Thrones series. They are very good.

ALittleScatterOfRain · 15/07/2012 20:35

It was 'Magic or Madness' I was thinking of. Basically you can use your magic and each time you use it it shortens your life, or you can not use it and it drives you mad.

It's written in the first person, but the chapters swap between people, so it's quite good.
