Bella2010star · 22/04/2012 21:40

I have just written about how me and my daughter used thestory sack we made. I hope that some people find this helpful. I would be really interested to hear if others have done this and whether it was successful :) Thanks

I did one for a charity I volunteered for - I think I loved making it more than the kids loved using but but who knows as I left soon after.

Any one else had a go at making story sacks?

Yes, often at school (primary teacher) and also for dd's nursery. Very successful up rto about y2, then interest wanes and really not cool by year 4!

I've always wanted to make these but can't sew and didn't know how to turn my pillow case into a sack.
All tips welcome!

I did, when my son was in primary. We did it in conjunction with the local W.I they did the sewing.

We did it for book "dear zoo". Dd loves it

Grannies can sew and really need projects (from personal experience of mine and those linked with the school). (Please don't attack me, all you full-time-career grannies.)

Yes, lots. I work in a nursery and the children love them. It is really easy and can be done with many items you have around the house. As long as the book is interesting enough.
They work really well with youunger children who need some encouragement to sit and with children with additional needs.
Dear Zoo is a good one to do, as is The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Some nurseries send them home with the children, with extension activities in them, like a non0fiction book or a jigsaw puzzle or a game.

Great to see that some people are really positive about making story sacks! I love them just in the process of doing one for Going on a bear hunt and the Hungry caterpillar :) I changed my pillow case into a story sack just by printing the title of the story onto t-shirt transfers all you do then is iron it on. The pillow cases are then clipped into the childrens trouser hangers and hung up in the wardrobe hope this makes sense :)

Love that idea Bella, then there is no seeing involved! That sounds like my kind Of story sack!
